from what i remember of wrath of khan kirk didnt know david was his son.
it seemed to me that carol must have transferred some place else without telling anyone.

Once again relying on my aging memory, I believe Kirk said, "Is that David?" showing recognition, and then, "Why didn't you tell him?" To which Carol replied, "Were we together? Were we going to be?" I think there was other dialogue as well that implied Kirk knew.

but yeah i read carol marcus had been in an earlier script but written out.

Indeed. Or, even if he didn't show recognition, he knew the lad's name was David. Nobody had told him that by that point of the movie - Kirk clearly knew beforehand that Carol Marcus had a son named David, and when this aggressive young man introduced himself as "Doctor Marcus", Kirk made the connection.

Kirk knew he had this one son. We don't know how many other sons or daughters Kirk had, or knew he had. Carol Marcus may still have been but a minor chapter or sub-paragraph in Kirk's life, despite being mother to his son.

Well, given his reaction to her, I don't think she was too minor. However, on further thinking, David must have been about ten at the onset of Kirk's Enterprise captaincy, and Kirk had been on deep space assignments before, so a farewell scene wouldn't necessarily be fitting.

but there is also a line about how kirk had agreed to stay away.

which leads into the lines quoted above.

Right, but that probably took place long before Enterprise, probably when he left on his first deep space mission on that other ship.

Or Spock taking a surreptitious tricorder scan. That would certainly be a "different direction" for Trek.
