Need suggestions for an episode for a newbie...

Okay so my friend has never seen TNG before, only Enterprise and walked in while I was watching The Royale. While I really love this episode, he asked me 'Is this episode going to make me love TNG?'. Now obviously its not. Its quite a relaxed episode that doesn't really go anywhere.

My question is, what episode should we watch next that will 'make him love TNG?'. Bear in mind he has knowledge of the Star Trek universe but not of Next Gen in particular, ie doesn't know the characters etc.

^^^ That's probably a good choice.

I know it'd probably be strange to say the very last episode, but it's actually what made me fall in love with TNG. I had never watched TOS except for one or two of the movies, and hadn't seen an episode of TNG. When it went off the air, I caught "All Good Things..." and was hooked. :)

My first ever Trek episode was The Loss. I know it's hated by many, but I liked it then and I like it now :) I regret not watching the show in order though, because after watching seasons 4 through 7 and then 1 through 3, there were very little surprises (also didn't help I'd read all the summaries on the official site by then *lol*)

I'd say it depends a little on the types of shows/movies he generally prefers. While both Best of Both Worlds and All Good Things... are solid choices, if your friend is a massive comedy fan, perhaps Deja Q is a nice choice. If on the other hand he prefers drama there's The Innerlight, if he enjoys ethical/social issues he might enjoy Pen Pals, Who Watches the Watchers or Measure of a Man and if he likes action/adventure/mystery there's Conspiracy, Power Play or Timescape.

To name but a few ;)

^ Power Play is one of the best 'guilty pleasure' episodes of Trek. Love the take over scene and the music with Worf running through the corridor is kinda nifty as well.

BOBW was the first full episode(s) I ever saw and it hooked me in for life.
It was like watching a movie.

Go with best of both worlds!

Id start with E@FP then go to BoBW, Family then AGT
AGT has much more meaning when you've at least seen E@FP

Of those, I would recommend Measure of a Man and Data's Day.. Data is easily one of the more lovable characters.

This is a very solid list indeed. My favourites from it are Peak Performance (which is a very good intro to lots of the main characters actually) and The Chase (though it's not such a good intro). The Hunted is another good example of a good intro in the list, and I think I'd add Arsenal of Freedom as another.

Then you should check out WTF followed by IDK...

What's with all the acronyms? :wtf:

Well it was Trek BBS that got me into the Trek acronyms to begin with! blame the others not me!

E@FP = Encounter at Far Point
AGT = All Good Things
BoBW = Best of Both Worlds
... and just for safe measure: TNG = The Next Generation

I know what they are, I just can't pass up an opportunity to tease someone. :p

You know, Rama's list is a damn good one, esp. if you want to NetFlix the eps and have a short TNG mini-marathon for your friend, LilyPadd. Aside from Best of Both Worlds, from that list above, I think Q Who and Measure of A Man will make your friend fall for TNG. -- RR

"The Drumhead" and "Q-Pid" turned me into a TNG fan. A friend introduced me to the show via those eps, and got me hooked!

I would definitely say The Best of Both Worlds,
It has drama and action. No comedy but you can't have everything. IMHO it stands out as one of the better TNG episodes.

"Conspiracy"

"Sarek"

"Clues"

"The Nth Degree"

"Unification I & II"

"Relics"

"Descent I & II"
