Blu-Ray Prices

I guess they figure that people willing to fork out $$$$ for a Blu-Ray player and HDTV can afford to pay $35 for a movie.

^ Well, very few BD's are priced at $35 in the store. Mostly Fox and Paramount titles. Many, many more at either $24.99 or $29.99. Add to that online stores like Amazon or the Warner Brothers store where there are severe discounts and other deals. If you pay full price for any movie on any format at any time, you're an idiot.

Just my .02.

Agreed. I pay less then $20 for most of my BDs. I got some of them for as little as $10-$12. At most I'll pay $25 for a new release that I really want.

^As we've discussed before, though, it's the delivery charges and import taxes that are a kicker for us Brits.

I checked out some of the prices on Amazon UK and they are just a *bit* higher than the US counterpart. That's interesting.

If you convert into dollars DVD and Blu-Ray prices in Europe are typically about a third higher than in the US.

I got an HDTV and a Blu-Ray player a little while ago (I waited to see who won the format war before I shelled out for the player). Currently I'm not double dipping and replacing any of my existing DVD collection with Blu-Rays - prices are too high for that, and most of my DVDs look fine when upscaled by my BD player.

But for those new releases that I really want I'm willing to pay the extra amount to get them on Blu-Ray. On Play.com a new DVD release is typically EUR18.49 and a new release Blu-Ray is typically EUR25.49. I can put up with EUR7 extra for films I really want - although for a lot of films I'd wait until I could get it for less than that.

For me, I won't spend 30 bucks for a movie, in my opinion there isn't any movie worth that.

That said, when I bought my HDTV I got a free HD DVD player.
I asked if the Xbox 360 Hd DVD add on was offered in that deal and the Circuit City manager said sure as it was a bit cheaper that the regular players.

Toshiba had a deal for 5 free HD DVD's with the purchase of a player and believe it or not I had 2 of the little sticker thiggies on my HD DVD box so I actually got 10 free movies.

At the time the format war was going on I bought one movie (300 when it was first released) and haven't bought one since. because of that weeks sale ad I think the HD DVD was like 3 bucks more than the regular DVD so I said what the heck.

It will take me quit a while (and much lower prices) for me to ever convert to blu-ray, or even buy all my new movies on HD DVD (at that time).

I still have a ton of VHS's that I haven't re-purchased in DVD and honestly I'm in no hurry to do even that.

So far I'm still fine with DVD, my HD DVD player upscales them anyway so no biggie.

Score. I got 6 Blu-Ray movies free with my player - the Spider-Man trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

I've got a question for people that have jumped on the Blu-train (sorry about that, lol); how many BDs do you have in your collection? I currently own 40 BDs (42 titles 'cause of the Spidey trilogy).

So far I've just got the 6 Blu-Ray films I got free. Batman: Gotham Knight will be my first Blu-Ray purchase. I figure there'll be about a dozen films per year that I'll get as new releases at current Blu-Ray prices.

The Blade Runner set was the first one I got. I must say, its beautiful in HD ;)

The others I have are The Rock and the Die Hard Collection, all of which are gifts

Kinda poetic, when you think about it. 69 as of today, not including the two en route and the three or four I've already preordered.

Well because of the aforementioned price issues, I don't have a whole lot yet. I've got the Spiderman trilogy and the Die Hard 4 pack, and probably about 5 others.

I saw a rumor today that Paramount would be releasing Ironman and the Godfather Trilogy sometime in September. If I can find bargains on them, I'll definitley pick them up. I really liked The Incredible Hulk and will get it also when it comes out.

The thing is, the overwhelming majority of my video purchases are TV season box sets. They probably won't be affordable unfortunately.

^ Iron Man and Godfather are September 30, according to the Digital Bits, among others.

DVDs were expensive too in the early days of the format.

I have a Blu-Ray player (PS3) and an HDTV, but I haven't as yet bothered to purchase any Blu-Ray films. The LOTR EEs will likely be my first when they're eventually released.

Agreed. I remember DVD's and even VHS at first. My advice: buy used and buy on ebay.
