Blu-Ray Prices

What is up with the prices of films on Blu-Ray ? Specifically, films released by Fox and Disney in Europe.

I'm not going to spend £18 on one film. It's just not happening. I prefer to buy, not to rent.

Fox and Disney movies are typically the worst for region protection. Both region protect even their catalogue titles making it difficult to find the films for lower prices. Neither seem to allow the prices of their titles to be cut by much either, I have not seen their films being involved in any 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 deals.

Just because they think their product is piracy proof, they are not going to grow this format by charging as much as they do for a film.

I guess one of the big problems is that HD-DVD isnt around anymore to offer any competition, so it may take a while longer for prices to drop. Just a guess though

DVDs were expensive too in the early days of the format.

I have a Blu-Ray player (PS3) and an HDTV, but I haven't as yet bothered to purchase any Blu-Ray films. The LOTR EEs will likely be my first when they're eventually released.

I know, I was an early adopter. Even so, I don't want to double dip down the line when things get cheaper. I had enough of that when I switched from VHS to DVD.

Yeah, i get where you're coming from. I doubt I'm going to double dip on anything, DVDs still look good in my opinion. As a mater of fact, the only Blu-Rays I own were gifts from my girlfriend. I doubt I'm even going to bother buying any myself until the price reaches DVD levels.

CDs, DVDs, were both relatively expensive when they first came out. And I rather suspect that if you adjust for inflation, Blu-rays wouldn't be any higher than DVDs when first introduced.

The thing is, I'm a proponent of the switch to blu-ray and I won't pay $30-$35 either. I don't have that many discs, but almost all of mine have been purchased for $20 or less. You just have to shop around, Ebay, Amazon, or even in-store specials. I picked up the Die Hard 4 movie pack for less than $60 through a seller on Amazon.com.

So deals can be had, you just have to look for them. As for double-dipping, I've only double-dipped The Searchers as it was one of my first two blu-rays.

Here in the UK it's possible to bargain hunt, but only with certain films. The aforementioned Fox and Disney films have stuck to their price point and have not budged. Since my PS3 is region locked, I cannot buy those two studio's films from the US.

In store purchases are out of the question while stores are selling them for £25+ alongside the same movie on DVD in a 5 for £30 deal.

I am finding myself queueing up purchases to save on delivery charges.

Remember the time when the TNG sets cost €99 apiece? I even saw at some retailers prices up to €119!
Good Lord!

HD DVD gets discontinued and the price of Blu-ray at least stays level, if not goes up. Humm. Get rid of competition and prices don't fall. Imagine that?

I'm not knocking you, Hermiod. Your request and response are both quite reasonable. It's just I want every 14 year old, over the top Blu-ray fanboy to have to pay more for their software. Serves them right.

Now back to reality. There are no 14 year old Blu-ray fanboy. Blu-ray owners are willing to pay more by a certain amount. Beyond that they'll just bargain hunt. If someone is paying more than $25 for each title then he or she is not looking harder enough or is affluent enough to not care about the price. Either way your snide remark is just wishful thinking here. :p BTW this post is mainly refering to the situation in North America. I really have no idea about the price in Europe.

This - - suggests you kind of are.

I am neither 14 nor a Blu-Ray fanboy. I wanted HD-DVD to win. The discs were cheaper and lacked any sort of region protection. Blu-Ray's competition is not HD-DVD, it never really was, it's DVD.

Time has moved on. DVD is not going to die as quickly as VHS did. People are going to look at the same film and ask why they should bother buying a Blu-Ray when they can get a DVD for a lot less money. The majority don't even care that the picture and sound is better.

For instance, Cloverfield is £11.99 on DVD on Play.com. They're now taking orders for the Blu-Ray at £17.99. People are going to look at that and ask what they're getting for the extra £6.

speaking of double-dipping, the crap with special features needs to stop. To the point where I don't even bother buying dvds anymore, and just get the blockbuster online thing. 6 months later, if I really liked it, i'll pick up the super-duper extra special edition, with the special features they didn't bother to include the first time.

Blu-ray is making it easy for me to not buy their format yet, too. In addition to the high expense, of course. They touted all these advanced features they could put on the big discs, camera angles, tons of bouns material, etc, and they are still releasing basically bare-bones discs. They need to start taking advantage of their large discs if they want to entice me to jump formats. Making their product just as bare-bones as the regular DVD just encourages me to hold off....

Seeing as how HD DVD and BD list prices were just about the same (I am Legend $35.99 for both versions)...not to mention Blu-Ray prices have NOT gone up (show me some proof, please)...and, as already stated, DVD's were not cheap in the beginning of that format either...

Big old  right back at ya.

It's pretty much a snake eating its own tail right now. Prices are so high because there is relatively low market demand; and there is relatively low market demand because prices are so high.

There will need to be a tipping point, and that will come when HDTVs are less expensive to buy; as of now, the majority out there don't even own an HDTV (much less Blu-Ray).

You can usually find BDs for a decent price, you just gotta wait a couple of months and shop around a bit.

I figure when Iron Man comes out on Blu-Ray, I'll go ahead and buy it, along with a Blu-Ray player. We'll have an HDTV by then, so might as well make it look good. Plus, Iron Man would be totally worth the upgrade. I did the same thing when Metal Gear Solid came out for the PlayStation and I got a PS1 just for MGS.

J.

I hear you. I won't buy any blu-rays unless I can get them for under $20. that's why I go to ebay
