Rob, you're missing the point. The point of the "outsider" character is that they allow the writers to make observations about our human heroes. An entire show of nothing but "outsiders" — your idea of a ship full of holograms, or other ideas that have been suggested involving the Klingons, Cardassians, or Romulans — would defeat the point. Trek was conceived at least in part to use the sci-fi/adventure format to comment on the human condition. How exactly does a ship full of aliens or androids or holograms accomplish that?
First off, hats off to mr. korman...funny funny guy...
As to your question? Generally I would agree. But it all really comes down to the writing. I'm not sure about you, but the best episode about how to raise our children was one that involved Data, and Lal.
The best episode about a family, with the biggest tear jerker moment, was the one with the Voyager doctor.
Why not invert the formula? How about a crew of holograms with ONE human acting as the outside..
All I am saying is this, and the ratings have shown this to be true. The simple TREK formula of throwing a crew in space, going planet to planet to see various human messages (about abortion-drugs-euthenasia-parenting) being delt with just isn't, and hasn't been working. Why? If you were to watch every episode of TREK, back to back, and the movies too, 24 hours aday, it would take over 6 weeks, 6 weeks, to see it all...the message is clear...enough already. Show us something else other than 6 humans and an outsider...
I have tried to come up with various ideas, but at least I am trying. The fact that TREK law show offends some of you, or a Trek CSI does as well, is to me, a good start.
But I tell you this...if David E Kelly did a legal version of Trek it would get far better ratings than Enterprise and Voyager. It would probably scare off regular viewers of trek, which is a good thing, but bring in a new group willing to see difficult legal issues of our day but done in the Star Trek way...
I guess we just disagree what the future Trek should be. And that is cool. Thats what this site is all about. I actually agreed with someone earlier that a crew is space could work if done in an entirely new way. But it would really have to wow me (and TV producers) to really get a green light.
