Actually, to answer the OP's question. I think the nuEnterprise () will be able to fire in port and starboard directions regardless of where they mount the phaser canons.

Hope so, though I don't know if they'll be used. On the original Connie I always imagined 6 banks with two ball turrets each - One forward on the ventral saucer, two port and starboard on the upper, two on the bottom of the secondary hull, and one aft just above the shuttle bay.

I'm more concerned about the photon torpedo tubes myself. If they stick them on the base of the neck, or even worse just below the bridge a la Franz Joseph, I'm going to hit something.
