Macross Frontier (tv). Coming in 2008!

So do I need to watch Macross 7 before this?

Nope. I might refer to things which I think could be references to M7 or events from it, but the show is definitely not such that you need to know anything about Macross 7.

It probably helps if you watched the original Macross series just to know about the technologies involved, what's a Zentraedi, etc... but there's no need to have seen Macross 7 to follow anything in Frontier.

It has the same director so I think he puts in some references here and there just for the diehard fans to go 'oooh neat'

I don't really think I have a favorite character so far. I like Ozama Lee because he's pretty cool and a Fire Bomber fan ;) but we don't know too much about the characters yet.

I like Sheryl a lot more then I expected to, especially after they kinda "divad" her up from the pilot/special first episode to the actual first episode, but she's come across really good since then.

To really get the whole idea of the Macross universe, I would definitely watch the original Macross series (or at least the Macross movie "Do You Remember Love?" which probably stands as the best ever attempt at condensing a TV series into a movie), and the Macross Zero OVA series. In fact, watch Macross Zero first, as it is a prequel.

Macross Zero is strongly tied to Macross Frontier, at least from the many clues dropped in Frontier so far. You won't HAVE to watch it to get what's going on, but it fills in some of the details and thematic continuity.

As far as watching previous Macross shows to get the show, you really dont need to at all. The only other exposure I have to Macross other than this show is the original show, but I watched that well over 15 years ago when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel and I dont really remember much from that at all; just the very basic concepts like giant aliens and a transforming aircraft carrier thing

^That would actually be Robotech which is a slightly altered version of Macross. They reworked some of the story elements, put in new music, and removed a lot of the blood and harsher language. There really isn't that much difference between the two though other than the fact Macross is only the first 30 something episodes of Robotech. After that Robotech uses two other unrelated series Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeda.

Favorite character so far would be Ranka.

As far as previous Macross incarnations go I've been keeping up fairly well and have seen:

Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Macross: Do You Remember Love
Macross II: Lover's Again
Macross Zero
Macross 7 (Tried it but dropped it after it triggered my eye-rolling meter too many times)

You think so? So far I haven't really seen anything in Frontier that reminded me or in any other way seemed linked to Zero. What connections are you making there?

Vajra markings, Nomes, Protoculture fragments, and once you see Episode 10 it'll REALLY TIE IN with Macross Zero.

Episode 07 / "First Attack" has already aired.

MIND NUMBINGLY AWESOME MECHA ACTION. You guys will LOVE it.

Cool. I've only seen the original Macross as part of Robotech. But I've seen Macross II, Macross Plus and Macross Zero over the years.

The battle scenes in episode 7 were spectacular. Don't want to be too spoilerly since some people wait until the subs are out to watch the episodes.

I will say this though. The scene where we see Ozama using the heads up display in his helmet and seeing it track his eyes movement as he picked out each target visually before launching a missile barrage...:techman:

I geekgasmed.

They had a similar scene in Macross Zero where Focker selects incoming missiles with his eye movements and the two twin guns on the VF-0s head then shot them down

Renato (from Macrossworld) was kind enough to scan the ten page article from the April 2008 issue of Animation Note.
There's plenty of lineart of the VF-25, Vajra, mechanical designs, and interviews with Valkryie Designer Shoji Kawamori and Mechanical Designer Junyo Ishikagi.

I've cleaned up the images and put them all on one zip file. Enjoy!

#7 rocked!

Q: Who were the guys in the purple looking fighters at the end, who we saw travelling through fold during the end credits? Descendants of Shin and Sara or something else entirely?

Man that episode was pure concentrated badass. Loved every moment of it though I'm a bit confused by some of the plot points in the episode. Hopefully there will be an explanation soon. Can't wait for the next episode!

I wonder how much of the budget they spent on this episode because the next episode looks like a pretty drastic downturn in animation quality compared to anything in the series to date.

It would be interesting if the Varja are related to the beings who left at the end of Macross Zero with Sara & Shin.

I am also hoping BIG TIME that SDF-2's fate is finally revealed in this series. It was the ship which Misa, Hikaru, and Minmay were all on that departed Earth in 2012 and in Macross Plus & Macross 7 we're told was never heard from again after 2016.

If this series can tie in Macross Zero with the fates of characters from the original series that have been dangling out there for 20 years or so it would be a dream come for me.

Episode 10's title is:

The Legend of Zero
.

Sweet! If they could explain the end of Zero somehow, that would be a great help. I was never quite sure what happened with Shin at the end there, although Sara's merging with the bird-human seemed pretty clear.

I'd also like an explanation of how the bird-human guy fits into the whole protoculture thing.

Well the animation quality took a significant drop, but given how much detail is in the space battles and had been in previous episodes I guess it will just have to be a given that they need a break here and there.

I was surprised the quality was so strong 7 episodes in as it had been to be honest. Next episode looks pretty solid though.

As for the episode itself, I actually quite enjoyed the plot. I gotta say I like the Sheryl/Alto/Ranka triangle a heckuva lot more then some of the previous triangles in Macross (Misa/Hikaru/Minmay, Basara/Mylene/Gamlin[although that never was resolved anyway]).

From the little bits we get before the episode starts It looked like some of the Birdman stuff was shown similar drawings anyway. So from the episode titles given earlier I am really looking forward to seeing some resolution/continuation from Macross Zero.

Sheryl in the pilot program is interesting, but I really hope she doesn't start flying a Veritech with a guitar ;) Basara was quite enough...
