Janeway - worthy TREK Captain or not?

^ Okay guys - take it to the lounge. The thread is about Janeway. If the next few posts aren't about Janeway I'm shutting it down.

The one thing I find sort of interesting is that in real life many TREK fans sort of tuned out of VOY along the way yet two things seem to have happened.

1) There is a resurgent appreciation for VOY now. I don't know why. Maybe because people are catching it on reruns and really appreciating it for what it is. Or maybe they are a bit TREK starved and are seeing it for the first time.

2) For all the crap that VOY and her fans had to put up with, Captain Janeway sure as hell had some legacy "in universe". She brought USS Voyager home, she winds up being an Admiral AND Picard's boss in Nemesis. Also,if you consider the post Nemesis TNG novels (which are very good IMHO), Janeway plays significant roles in those as well.

All in all I find this very interesting/

Mulgrew herself predicted that over time fans would grow to love Voyager. One of the few things I did agree with her on.

I think people have grown to love it the second time around because they know what to expect from it now and can view it objectively.

I also think it's aged better than TNG. Now I might change my mind again in another decade, but TNG is just too dated--and not in a good way (as in TOS).

Aged well as in look or content?

I find that it's both. Moreso the look of it, its very 80s but also some of the stories especialy early on are so cheesy
I agree with look.
Enterprise-D's enterior looks more like a luxury liner. However, I think that was the point of it, to give it a more "homey" feel.

However, Enterprise-E & Voyager have a more futuristic modern look. It also helps that they have a metallic finish to everything instead of a wood and beige paint deco.

^The sign of the times, my friend. Wonder what it'll look like in 20 years?
True, true.

However, I find B5 to look way more dated than TNG.
Strangely enough, B5 looks more 80's with set & costume design even though it was filmed in the 90's.

I think TNG's now retro look fits with TOS retro and how designs come around again. Begin it started in a pre-Borg era, now Post-Borg and starfleet rethinking ship design, ENT-E now falls in line with Voyager. Seeing as how Starfleet ships are now not only made for exploration but combat as well. ENT-E & Voy. fit that new motif.

So far I'm not liking the way the TNG novels killed her off but maybe they'll have her "pull a Spock".

*spoiler for the books*

it's pretty obvious that she's not dead though

Interesting of all the Treks that take place in the modern era, the one that was the least fan favorite has the dead Captain.

I smell an agenda.

Thanks for the use of a spoiler warning/spoiler code, kimc.

My apologies! Post corrected. I've also taken the liberty of using spoiler code on the posts that followed.

Ah, come on, that wasn't meant so seriously, kimc. :) Hope I didn't come across as rude. To be honest, I haven't planned on reading the books. And even if I had, now I am spoiled anyway. Hope you excuse my little "joke". :(

I'm frankly relieved you weren't offended because if you were planning on reading the books you would have had every right to be. Thanks for setting me straight on that. :)

You did bring up a good point though which is that we (me too) need to remember to use the spoiler code.
