RIP Walter Koenig

He was the only franchise actor I met in person. This was in early 1980, at the only convention I attended. He gave a good speech that got some laughs. Somebody asked him what the second movie would be about, and he thundered it would be "a battle-royale with the Klingons!" That got some cheers but also some groans, IIRC.

His book Chekov's Enterprise had already sold out in the venue, so I bought another copy of the TMP novelization for him to sign. I still have it, and that's my only autograph, ST or otherwise.

So very sad. Koenig had been doing reviews of TOS episodes on The 7th Rule podcast with Cirroc Lofton up until earlier this year. I wasn't expecting this news. I have never had the opportunity to meet him, but he seemed like a genuinely nice man, and he never came across as resentful with being so heavily identified with the Chekov character.

Requiescat in pace, Mr. Koenig. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Shatner continues to look fantastic. However, Takei has been in a wheelchair in recent public appearances and has not looked great. Sad.

The passage of time.

Only consolation is that Walter died of old age. No dementia. No pain.

He will through his work live forever. There’s that, I suppose. Like the rest of the TOS cast, he left an indelible mark on popular culture.
