Evidence of SNW being a possible alternate timeline from TOS

And the talent pool for early Starfleet captains was pretty shallow. A few hotshots in the NX test program and probably not much beyond that.

We know Archer beat out A.G. Robinson for the captaincy shortly before he took command of the ship, but he was probably the favorite all along. Archer knew his father, and his father built the damn engine.

I get they needed a personal connection between Archer and NX program, but that didn’t do Archer any favors.

Bakula was the biggest problem because he simply didn’t fit the role. He didn’t feel like an explorer, he felt like a suburbanite on vacation.

Thing is, I think they were going for "scientist's son who became a test pilot but has no real deep space experience," so Bakula's greenness and naivete work, at least partially. The Earth Starfleet pretty much admits during the NX-01's launch ceremony that Henry Archer's son is the only real choice for the new ship's captain, so nepotism and gladhanding seem to be a thing in Starfleet even before the Federation.

They got Bakula for the role because he was very popular thanks to Quantum Leap. The problem was that ENT was not Quantum Leap, and he could only work with what he was given. It's not like Bakula was a bad actor. The writers and producers simply didn't develop his character well enough.

And speaking of development, the world-building for ENT was absolutely abysmal. Between the ambiguity about exactly how this Earth Starfleet operates (how did Archer attain the rank of captain? Did he or any of the other crew serve on other ships before the NX-01? Where did they get their schooling/training from?), and the production values, technology, etc. coming right off of ST: Voyager, the show pretended to be a 100-years-before-TOS prequel but looked and felt like TNG & VOY Jr.

It was literally called Starfleet Training, and that school issued graduation certificates or diplomas to officers. We saw at least one or two in the series inside crew quarters.

As for the rest, yeah, they could have developed more backstory. But some Treks, no matter how good or bad, just didn't do much of that.

Huh, I don't recall any of that. And it still doesn't really explain why everyone on that ship seemed to act like it was their first assignment.

I don't know how this became the Enterprise thread but the Vulcans had veto power on most of the Earth Starfleet stuff anyway? Soval knew Archer since Archer was a kid (kid Archer called Soval "Ambassador Pointy"). The Vulcans probably wanted to stick with a known quantity over some unknown like... Balthazar Edison.

I do wonder what happened to old Krall in the Prime Timeline. Maybe the Gorn laid eggs on him and his buddies and that was that. Even the Altamid life transference tech might not be enough to protect against Gorn eggs.

He may never have existed at all in the Prime Universe.

Kelvin as a branched timeline that was one for one until 2233 is somewhat untenable.

No, in fact in Shadows of P'Jem, Soval reminded Admiral Forrest that Captain Gardner was his preferred choice to command the NX-01, to which Admiral Forrest responded with "Vulcans don't make command decisions around here."

By the fourth season Gardner had made Admiral and became Archer's direct superior after Forrest was killed. And Gardner pretty much did Administrator V'Las's bidding without question, suggesting the reason Soval (or more probably his Vulcan superiors) wanted Gardner commanding the ship was because he was more likely to be their compliant lapdog.

The only person I ever heard make this claim was Simon Pegg I think? Who was a writer on Beyond but this idea was never onscreen. This is why I think there should be some wiggle room in regards to writers' intentions and canonicity honestly.

As an Asian myself, the writers may intend that SNW Kyle is TOS Kyle, but I personally don't consider that and the rewriting of an established character into an Asian causes more resentment against us Asian males than if they had originated a new Asian male character in my opinion.

Except the very function collapses unless somehow by some entirely improbable coincidence all the predestination paradoxes of 23rd and 24th centuries that allowed 19th, 20th and 21st century Earth to reach the same points necessary to maintain a perfect duplicate sequence of events managed to happen in this modified reality too. And everything new that was added to the lore from new shows must also be added in there too.

It really is just less of a headache to look at it as an entire separate universe like one of the ones from Parallels, plus it prevents inviting comparisons between the characters because none of them are the same at all.

If that isn't an issue then that's fine but I cannot shut off my brain when it comes to stuff like that. I can iron out a lot when it comes to headcanon but there are some cavernous holes that even I can't ignore.

Kyle is a very common surname plus we haven't seen him since season 1. I remember some people thinking Jenna Mitchell was a retcon of Gary Mitchell. Another common enough name but the usual sorts were up in arms about it. I just assumed she was named in honour of Kenneth Mitchell.

Anyone who would resent Asian men for a fictional character being race-swapped was just racist scum anyway and would only use it as an excuse to express their racism. It would not be the cause of it just the cause of them crawling out of the woodwork. Whilst unsuccessfully trying to claim they're only talking about a character.

Until January of 2233 the Kelvin Timeline was the one we'd be familiar with, Khan, Eugenics Wars, World War III, First Contact and the events of ENT. The third movie even confirms that the Xindi attack on Earth happened along with the Earth-Romulan War.

The point of divergence is the black hole appearing near the U.S.S. Kelvin.
