I eventually did figure it out, but it took me a bit. First thing that popped into my head was "Cray" as in Seymour, and "dot" as in URL punctuation. And that didn't

Thank you all for your responds. I agree that 10 episodes per season are too less. And I don't think that all of new Trek is bad. The firsrt 2 seasons of SNW and all of Lower Decks are brilliant. And I even liked Starfleet Academy. Unfortunately I couldn't watch Prodigy so far. Honestly I got frustrated because I was disappointed by the last SNW episode with Q. Anyway, maybe it's not streaming but worse story telling.
Just storytelling of its time.
No reason it has to stay that way. The pendulum has swung one way; it can swing back. Ten years from now, the current paradigm for shows will seem dated too.
Yup. Feels very much like other shows of the era in terms of storytelling style.
That's not related to whether Trek is streaming or terrestrial/cable.
But how many new eyeballs, first-time views are they attracting? Are new fans finding Trek?
This is the key. This and the amount of mature or graphic content. Trek flourished in the 70s because kids and young adults were finding it. For Trek to thrive it needs to be accessible to the younger audience without being childish, yet still appealing to mature adults without being old and stuffy. New "virgin" audiences need to be able to discover Trek on their own, out in the wild, the way they discover everything else in their fandom.
Does that describe this current era of Trek? Are there any members of this discussion board whose initial exposure to Trek was one of the modern streaming series?
Fewer than if it were still on Netflix or Amazon possibly. But being a niche franchise with a stereotype attached to those watch it, it would never pull in the huge numbers no matter where it was.
Apart from TNG, Trek was not must see tv viewing for most young people. The TV world of 1970 is much different from 2026. British TV had only three channels, now we have 100s.
I'd say it's about on par with Q putting the Next Gen crew into Robin Hood. That was awful, too.
I’ve always enjoyed Trek when it’s weird. The original always paired well with The Twilight Zone.
The only thing awful about that was the evident lack of knowledge the producers had about what people from Nottingham actually sound like.
Weird can be amazing. It's just very hit and miss, IMHO.

Weird Trek is better than boring Trek. To paraphrase the Shat; "to explore strange new worlds." Strange can be weird, no?
I don't think streaming is a problem. I think 10-episode seasons and season-long story arcs have been problematic. Here's where I see Trek working best (just my opinion):
1. On TV rather than in movie theaters.
2. Centered around a smaller number of 'central' characters. (4-6) Recurring background characters are fine but they should never be the focus unless as a catalyst for main character growth/arcs.
3. Episodic format but with arcing elements, particularly regarding characters and milieu. (DS9 did this best)
4. Keep it away from Earth, like Roddenberry dictated with TOS.
5. Make it internally consistent. (TNG did this best)
6. 16-18 episode seasons. Enough to be hearty, but minimize filler. Give it strong two-part openers and closers.
7. Cut out all nonsensical elements like promoting cadets to command starships. (Kelvin-Trek, I'm looking at you!)
8. Going forward, I think the best option is to reboot the franchise completely or move it just past the Picard era (mid 25th Century) and start with a fresh ship and crew, and a new region of the galaxy to explore. And by a fresh crew, I do not mean Captain 7 of 9. I mean no TNG-era actors AT ALL. Sever the tie.
