Kirk on the bridge. Warp off to a new adventure. The adventure continues.
I'm pretty easy to please.
Sometimes simple is best. I would like to see more Sam Kirk during the last season. Maybe him getting his new assignment.

The Lincoln has several thousand people aboard. The counselors aboard the Lincoln are reportedly getting quite a workout right now.
Which is what makes the "no counselors" argument a dead letter. No one needs to rationalize their existence or fight the canonistas on this. Mental health support is the practice in the Navy NOW. Despite how badly run the U.S. military is under the current administration in Washington.
TOS didn't show them? Ignore TOS. TOS was wrong.
I love this!A flashforward where the crew are hanging out on Talos IV visiting Pike and reminiscing might be just right for the finale.
That's nice. The Lincoln has several thousand people aboard.
Pikes Enterprise has 203.
If you only have 203 people you need a supply officer and engineers a lot more than you need a counselor. That's nice.
So, maybe only three or four therapists.
Certainly not an argument for "none."
I would think that that's more than enough personnel to require a mental health specialist of some sort. These people are isolated and far from home and face all sorts of violent and out of the ordinary situations. If you only have 203 people you need a supply officer and engineers a lot more than you need a counselor.
Yeah, that doesn't present an actual necessary choice. If you only have 203 people you need a supply officer and engineers a lot more than you need a counselor.
Starfleet is based on Genes navy service, in the 1940s.Yeah, that doesn't present an actual necessary choice.
The only way it's plausible to fans is because they agree to pretend that Starfleet is operating in 1940.
Really, people are just twisting themselves in knots to pretend that mental health support would be treated as optional on these ships for the sake of an argument.
Garth of Izar, Tristan Adams and Janice Lester all say "hello". Kirk really should have spoke with someone about his obsession with that cloud creature. Also, humanity is post scarcity. Hopefully we are more evolved and into self care that we need significantly less counselors and other mental health issues. We are not failures, we simply try something else.
He was in the Army Air Forces. Not sure how much Trek takes from Gene’s personal military experience, it owes more to the fiction he read growing up. Though as a bomber pilot he probably experienced first hand the mental stress of wartime military service.Starfleet is based on Genes navy service, in the 1940s.

I always heard that the counselor was placed there because of the 80s push for psychology... never heard it was a Rodenberry thingClearly he thought mental health was important, which is why he included a psychiatrist in TOS and a counselor in TNG.
Yes, entertainment often reflects the time in which it was made. Psychotherapy was also quite big in the postWWII era and can be seen as an element in that era’s entertainment.I always heard that the counselor was placed there because of the 80s push for psychology... never heard it was a Rodenberry thing
Thanks!
That's...not why counselors exist is because we're failuresStarfleet is based on Genes navy service, in the 1940s.

Or a writer. What if in the finale we see Johnny Frakes pause the program because he's going over a moral quandary on supporting Picard or Pressman.
