people keep saying this episode is gimmicky, but it really isn't? If you remove the Black and White it doesn't change the story that much at all.
That to me sums up the issue. If you remove the b&w it has no bearing on the story. It proves that it's just a gimmick without the skill to back it up in the story.

They do it because they think it looks cool.

Since when is this an illegitimate goal for visual entertainment?
It should be a tactic to a greater purpose I feel, not the goal.

Like what are you trying to achieve? What are you trying to say? If you are going to take a concept do you know how to follow it through? For example noir is more then being dark.

Not ever single moment of Star Trek or any entertainment needs a bigger purpose or flawless execution every moment. But it should be the aim most of the time.

I was fine with suspending my disbelief until she managed to fool facial recognition software and I was just taken completely out of the story for a second. But otherwise it was fine.
If this is how facial recognition works in the future then I'd say most of us are screwed.

Which viewer are they supposed to be writing their stories for? As you can clearly see, Trek fans are not a homogenous group.
Whomever they want to write for that they feel is the right audience for their work and commercially viable.

That's typically how TV works.

As a big fan of film noir and classic 40s movies, I found the B&W absolutely gorgeous. Celia looked particularly glamorous. It was B&W on the ship too because the technobabble mentioned it had to do with the sun in this system. Whatev.

I was really pleased to see the spotlight on Una and thought Rebecca did a terrific job. I loved how she handled the detonator issue in the end.

The Casablanca homage scenes were lovely and made me want to rewatch Casablanca again.

Finally, we got to see a planet under Klingon occupation!

I couldn't get into the B plot with La'an. I'm not sure why.

I gave the ep an 8.

I guess I'm going to have to go with a 9 just for the Casablanca ambience underlying a serviceable story. I appreciated the way they incorporated M'Benga's backstory into the episode, even though they gave nurse Chapel short shrift in the B-story, where Khan outthought Spock, inexplicably. I did not like Pike taking a back seat or even disappear, since he's really supposed to be the headliner. The agonizer (?) scenes with Uhura left a bit to be desired, but that has to do with how the effects were directed and acted. The production values were superbly top notch without overshadowing the actual story, which while okay, didn't pack any kind of real punch. No emotional involvement with any of the characters fighting for independence, even the 36.4 Hz lady who committed suicide. It needed a here's looking at you, kid moment, and didn't have it.

Really liked this one! One of the only episodes across all the shows that felt like a TOS episode. I agree with others that the black and white gimmick was unnecessary, but felt harmless to me. Pairs nicely with Spider Noir. Also I’m a big Prisoner of Zenda fan so the plot appealed to me.

Agree with others that the TOS Klingons were somewhat sanitized here, but if I were writing it, I’d probably do the same since the Klingons are so beloved now.

Chuck Barkley was ok as Kor. Not quite how I picture him but not apocryphal either.

Personally I don’t really see how Una helping the resistance was a grey area. They can either split or help free people from a brutal regime.
