Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley developing Star Trek reboot for Paramount

But the Kelvinverse movies did work. The first two made money and all of them are pretty good. While some complained about the look, especially the lens flares, I don't think their was a overwhelming complaint about canon and continuity except from those few who didn't understand it was a new universe and not the Prime Universe that was altered.
They worked to a degree. The mishandling of them and poor timing of sequels ensured that the casuals moved on and that the canon complaints would become more prominent in the debate. It wasn't overwhelming, but they couldn't completely get away from the canon complaints either.

As I said, they could easily go right back to the Kelvin films, and have that canon clear slate but no one seems interested in doing that.

2009 in particular fares the worst to me. They never quite overcome the script problems they had to improvise fixes on during the Writer's Strike.
Agreed. And then "into darkness" played the "remember this" game a little too hard the way Picard season 3 eventually would. I liked "Beyond"...

I'll be honest in that I enjoyed '09 while sitting in the theater, but it didn't hold up very well upon rewatch.

even thought the kelvin verse movies made a buttload of cash

i still wonder why paramount never made more kelvin verse movies
They didn’t make that much money. They did well in the context of Trek but the studio expectations were higher than what was achieved. I’m a big fan of those films, especially the first two, and would love to have more with that cast but it’s not terribly realistic anymore.

I loved the movie when it first came out. Upon a recent rewatch, I found the plot to be quite silly and the plot holes to be numerous. It’s actually a pretty dumb film. But then, so was Phantom Menace, and they both did well at the box office.

Well, they are, by far, my two favourite films in the franchise (it’s not even close). Not that I’m trying to change your mind, but rather to illustrate how difficult it is to satisfy all the fans.
Indeed, yes. 09 is probably my top Trek film for just rewatch value alone.

Just did a rewatch as part of my 60th Trek celebration. The film has a very enjoyable story, compelling characters and intense action. Kirk and Spock are perfectly cast and the tension of the film is good.

It's a film I rewatch often because Kirk's arc is so compelling. I laugh, I cry and I enjoy the characters.

History is replete with examples of fun and dumb selling big.
