Chakotay was a decent character, and I like Robert Beltran, but it's yet another case of the Voyager writers just abandoning their premise. It started out that Chakotay, being Maquis, could provide some -- *gasp* -- conflict among the command crew.
But unlike DS9, who embraced the conflict between Sisko and Kira and let their bond and respect come organically over time, Voyager basically had Janeway and Chakotay as best buds within a couple episodes.
Honestly, I think going to UPN may have been the worst thing to ever happen to Trek.
Not just Janeway and Chakotay. The entire Starfleet/Maquis conflict was dropped halfway season 1, until someone remembered and they did the misfit episode at the end of season 1.
Oh, and in season 3 someone remembered and felt like dragging it up for a holodeck bottle episode.
It isn't just you. DS9 truly shined with no bad or boring characters. Hell, a LOT of their secondary/recurring characters (Nog, Martok, Dukat, Winn, etc.) got better development than most leads from VOY and ENT.
Indeed. God, I should rewatch DS9.
