The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

I sorta wish Maud Adams had been able to have a much more visible and well-recognized career outside of her two Bond films. Octopussy showed she had enough screen presence and range to be an effective star outside of action and adventure, but she never got to shine the way she should have.

Maud was also one of the only Bond girls who felt like a match for AND age-appropriate to James Bond.

Yes she was only young enough to be Rog's daughter rather than his granddaughter;)

I'm familiar with the theory that Michael Bay's The Rock is a stealth James Bond film, though I've never delved too deeply into the theory. Then I saw this video on BlueSky this morning, and I'm convinced that The Rock (which I've not seen in years) is the final Connery Bond film in the EON sequence.

Also, Claire Forlani was and is gorgeous.

Has anyone here read 1965's James Bond Dossier by Kingsley Amis? It's a critical defense of Fleming's 11 Bond novels, and a rebuttal to critics of said books.
I have not only read it, but I bought a used hardcover copy in the early 90s.

I've not read it in 30-plus years, but I remember Amis' defense of Fleming as a prose stylist, which I think is valid. "The Living Daylights" is probably the finest piece of James Bond prose, and there are some exquisite passages in the novels.

I don't have twenty minutes to spare at the moment, so I'll just ask, does that video address the one major flaw I've always had with that theory? Specifically, that Bond is Royal Navy with the rank of Commander, while Connery's character in The Rock was a Captain in the Royal Army and was also SAS?

And if their explanation was "Bond went undercover" I'm done here.

Yes, and it ties into YALT and how Ed Harris' villain would've been in Hong Kong at the same time. Basically, the theory is that Harris recognized Bond from the events of YALT and was testing him. Bond/Mason recognized this and lied to throw Harris off.

Hmmmm. Considering how I feel about THE ROCK*, that's almost as negatorily :barf:ey as ending Bond's tenure with THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN. I'll just comment that Connery and Cage phoned things in far too much for my liking, and thank God Ed Harris and David Morse picked up the balls C&C dropped.

(*It's no CON AIR, though that's easy for me to say as I don't have to take a wee-wee. ARMAGEDDON and especially CRIMSON TIDE were vastly better in the end. Cage redeemed himself somewhat with CON AIR. Perhaps Connery redeemed himself by not doing a LEAGUE 2.)

I'll give them points for creativity. I'm still not convinced, but it's at least better than the tired old undercover alias theory adherents to this theory usually use, which doesn't make any sense when you actually think about it.

I was this old when I learned that East Germany rushed their own Bond film into production to try and beat Dr. No to the big screen.
