Is VOY a good show to segue into after TNG for a newbie like my roommate?

Even though my roommate isn't interested in Star Trek much anymore, going to try to show her some VOY soon, maybe Scorpion or Year of Hell for starters
What kind of episodes did she like from TNG? Scorpion might not be great for a new viewer since it's a bit of an awkward introduction to the characters (since they're fighting with each other) and the Borg stuff might not land to someone who's not watched the series in full, or TNG.

Year of Hell is a pretty good one to start people with though!

I'll have to ask her, she didn't seem to particularly prefer anything outside Data lol

For me Voyager was a missed opprtunity. The premise was Starfleet ship lost in a different part of the galacy without Starfleet and Federation support, how will they cope?

Unfortunately they rather quickly abandoned that golden storytelling opportunity after the first season - the two different crews integrated pretty fast and well, the ressource problems also went away and it morphed into a general ship encounters problem of the week show much like TNG. It basically followed TNG's template and everything that was unique got mostly sidelined and only very occasionally revisited.

That doesn't mean Voyager is a bad show, i like it to this day but it could have been so much more, so if a new viewer is likely not wanting to be challenged too much by going outside the mold Voyager would be a good choice.

If however they would appreciate a different style there is nothing better than DS9. Much more shades of grey in this show than TNG and others, characters evolve massively over seven seasons and then there's the slow burn Dominion storyline that gains speed from season 3 and goes into overdrive with season 6. DS9 is far outside the Gene Roddenberry mold but i love TNG because it is firmly in the mold but DS) even more so because it isn't.

Agree with everything you say. VOY may actually be my least favorite of the Berman Era shows, but even then I still like it a lot. But it frustrates me in a similar way SNW does, a lot of lost potential imo

Put it this way: DS9 is the one that takes TNG and builds a universe out of it. VOY is the one that somewhat continues the planet-of-the-week paradigm. Which of those is more appealing?

Technically they both are to me, I actually do prefer the planet of the week format for Trek though admittedly ds9 is a better show than VOY mostly because of the writing
