The Dreadnought does contradict the idea of the Constitution-class being the largest at least conceptually. During TOS the Dreadnought might not yet have existed. Some fifteen years later, after we have seen the introduction of new technology, the Dreadnought might never have been built and remained only a proposal, and what was seen in TWOK could have been a historical file. After all in TWOK era there exists the newly built Excelsior.

Yeah, we had no comparisons to go by in either the TOS/TAS Era nor in the TOS Movies until the Excelsior showed up to dwarf the Connies.
I thought that was implied—it being the largest Starfleet vessel—by the context since the original post that peeps were questioning was comparing the E-nil to the E-D.
Based on the dialogue (but not the visual), I always got the impression that the Woden was supposed to be even larger than the Enterprise.

Granted the Woden was just stock footage of the Botany Bay, which was considerably smaller than the Enterprise, but since it was representing another ship entirely and there wasn't proof of scale with the footage they used, I believe we were meant to think it was a large freighter.

Refit! The class would've been atleast 30 years old by that point. Seems perfectly reasonable to assume they've tweaked the design a bit.
Yeah, I could easily believe there were bulk freighters or similar with greater internal volume. But the Constitution was then the largest Starship.
