Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

Well, the Sharks literally saved thier season with that mericle shot on Tuesday night. I hope the momentum keeps going. This is indeed a classic series though. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Canucks fans are pretty vile too.
Surrey, what can you say.....

Well after thinking about the firing of Nonis for a bit I have to say it's the right move to make, it's just that it happened at the worst possible time.

Nonis failed to see that the future is now for the Vancouver Canucks. A goalie lke Roberto Luongo only comes along to your franchise once every 15 years - if you're lucky - so you have to surround him with the best possible team. Nonis didn't do this, and was reluctant to make the big moves (as for the Luongo trade, that was something of a perfect storm that fell in to his lap - he needed to move Bertuzzi, Keenan is both an idiot and an admirer of Bert's, Alex Auld was coming off a 30+ win season and Fla had no goaltending) that would address the team's glaring shortcomings, and they were plain and obvious for anyone to see, and put the team over the top. I truly believe the team is one solid first line away from being a favorite to win the cup. At the end of the day, he delivered a team that was capable of making the playoffs and maaaaaaaybe squeezing out a first round win. That's unacceptable, especially in this city.

The thing that stings though is the timing. We're 2 months away from the draft and free agency opens up 9 days after that. We need leadership and a plan, and I hope the urgency for that doesn't rush the process and we end up hiring the wrong person. And I hope that whomever we hire puts his stamp on this team in terms of a major free agent signing, Hossa for instance, and trading away an Ohlund or our first rounder for some more scoring help.

At the end of the day though, it sure makes for an interesting summer ahead.

I think you might be right.

He gets mentioned whenever a vacant spot at GM comes up - he's very highly regarded. Plus he has the advantage of knowing the staff around him so they wouldn't have to completely blow up the organization as they no doubt would if a new GM stepped in.

Why not?

Article in the Washington Post I just heard about:

Some highlights (I think you need a password to read the whole thing).

Midway through the third period of this demoralizing 6-3 loss at Wachovia Center, 20,000 people in fluorescent orange howled for their World Extreme Cagefighters, and a crowd in the upper bowl chanted vulgarities at Ovechkin that went beyond the bounds of loutish fan behavior. As the frothing masses left the arena, they felt good about the bull being struck and killed -- checking the multi-generational Russian wizards Ovechkin and Sergei Fedorov into humility as much as the boards.

The Caps' postseason slogan: "Rock The Red." The Flyers? "Vengeance Now," which comes across as less of a slogan and more of a sequel to Charles Bronson's "Death Wish."

The Capitals didn't come out as Eastern Conference foes; they entered the playing surface like Russell Crowe entered the Coliseum in "Gladiator." Flyer fans didn't want to beat Washington as much as see Ovechkin bludgeoned, his teammates emasculated.

It's almost impossible to fathom, but the Capitals took the ice in front of a building as loud as Verizon Center last Friday. The fans wore orange instead of the Capitals' red, and many of the women and children looked as if they could work security for Megadeth.

The Flyers, of course, tried to distribute copies of the column to all of their fans, but they got hit with a cease and disist order. :D

Looking at the penalty minutes of the Wild-Avalanche game...what the heck was going on?!?

the Wild were getting beaten, badly in every phase of the game and decided to "send a message" for the next game. Playoff hockey

To me (most of my friends disagree), that strategy ended up biting the Wild in the ass. While they did go out of their "goon mode" from Wednesday night, they never quite got things together on Thursday. They played a heckuva 2nd period, but by the 3rd, they looked like they were wiped out.

Well, at least game 4 of Washington vs. Philly was exciting. The outcome was a shame, though.
Good triumphed over evil, light banished dark... in what parallel universe is the Flyers beating the Capitals termed "a shame?" Good sir, has the city of Pittsburgh corrupted your moral compass?

I don't know that the right "message" gets sent or that it works, but it seems to be what happens when a game gets out of hand, especially in the playoffs.

Maybe Calgary can suit this guy up for their next game. He's got all the moves

What a game last night by San Jose. They looked great and they finally played Phsyical against the Flames. I was a little nervious in the third when it was 4-3, but Nabby did his thing, the defense played well, and they won a very important game 5. It's great to finally see Marlaeu, Cheecho, and even Thornton step it up this week. I would like to see more from Campbell though, but the series is 3-2 going back to Calgary. That crowd is going to be insane so hopefully the Sharks come out with a way to shut them up early. Of course that happened on Sunday and look what happened. Still, this has been an awesome series.

Only in the Mirror Universe can the Flyers be "the good guys". ;)

As for the observation about the Bruins third period made above, it was a sad sight (for Habs fans). I can guarantee one thing, though--Price will NEVER make that mistake again. He'll make others, but never that one.

Ah well, Habs still have the series lead.

Then I suggest we find a way to return you to your goateed brethren!

Rangers are in Round II. I applaud them for taking out the NJ Devils - that's always a good move. :bolian:

Well, that's okay. After the Habs finally decide to play hockey rather than expecting the Bruins to fold by themselves, they'll move on to the next round and dispatch "the good guys" and all will be right with the universe once again.

Agreed about the Rangers, though. Anytime a boring, trap-oriented team is eliminated, it's good for hockey.

Great game between Montreal and Boston. I'm so glad we're getting a Game 7. Should be really fun, and it's between the 1 and 8 teams in the East. At least now there can be a Game 7, and it doesn't have to include the Sharks. ;)
