Tell that to the nameless faceless underlings dying of space flu on his ship while he was laugh-dancing with Rayna (who still in my opinion is much more fetching than Mara.).
Chekov in TOS was actually pretty great fun, he was just an OK officer, not exceptional or astounding, just fairly competent. Unfortunately, it was a downward spiral from there. He's still fun, just no longer competent.
And he's always yellow.
