News Season 2 will be the last (show cancelled)

Well, the fanbase really wanted Legacy, and got teen angst in the 32nd century. So, no surprise here...

I'm a fan. I wouldn't mind Legacy under circumstances, especially if Terry Matalas was kept far away from it, but I'd hardly say I wanted it.

Kids want teen stuff. Teens want adult stuff.

And adults, presumably, want adult stuff. Like Holly Hunter, Tig Notaro, Paul Giamatti, Gina Yashere, Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, Tatiana Maslany....

WTH would they do that??? 😱 Given the nature of steaming shows NONE of them should film a season ending cliffhanger. Completely a bad decision by the producers ...

I'm guessing Kurtzman saw the writing on the wall and was either making a last-ditch effort to get studio interest, or else leave with a middle finger.

I feel more disconnected from this franchise than ever before. Not because I disliked recent additions, but because politics and star trek remain tightly linked in my mind. I loved queer representation in these shows, and I don't believe CBS/Paramount will ever allow Star Trek to meaningfully tackle current-day politics.

I wouldn't jump the gun on that so quickly. I'm sure they will have LGBTQ+ representation in a future show or movie if they ever make them again. I think pretty much every new show today has. I can't think of one that I have watched recently that doesn't.

Not surprised and not disappointed. Kurtzman set the bar low with this one and failed to exceed it. On another note, it was arrogant of him to announce they'd be ending Season 2 on a cliffhanger.

Both A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Wonder Man were great shows that had roughly thirty minute episodes that delivered, something Starfleet Academy did not. They never deserved to be an hour plus and did nothing to justify the extra time.

More broadly, it's important to note that these extended universes of streaming shows have been a failure everywhere.

The studios rediscovered something long known - that every additional project in a long-running franchise turns off at least some long-time fans and doesn't add enough new people to make up the difference.

The only time this worked in the last 20 years was the MCU. Even then, it only had success during the movies-only era, not once Disney+ shows were added.

Not sure how this is a shock.
Because so many streaming shows get cancelled early. There have been so many that finished without resolution. It happened on network as well but streaming it happens well before a decent episode count. They should have done exactly what they did season 1. Wrap it up by the end of the season. I think this will be the first Trek show that ends on a cliffhanger never to be resolved. Hopefully they can re-edit and maybe filmed some alternate endings.

Dumb decision but it is what it is. Probably wouldn't have happened if the merger wasn't pending. I was predicting at least a 3rd season no matter if viewership went up or not. Just be thankful that knee jerk reactions weren't always what happened in the past where shows of all kinds took a season or two just to get on their feet.

While it did sometimes happen on "network" shows, back in the days of short-form storytelling with 22 to 26 episode seasons, shows were usually only 2/3rds of the way through production when they learnt they were cancelled (or, in Babylon 5's case, not cancelled) and this often gave them time to adapt the last two or three episodes to wrap things up. And, of course, ongoing stories were rare.

It's really the shift to shorter seasons and longer stories and longer post-production times that have eliminated this - nowadays, a show is well past principal photography when decisions are made about renewal, and this holds true whether the show is on a broadcast network or a streaming platform.

In any case, I'm disappointed for the folks working on the show and those who were enjoying it. I haven't started it yet, though it's on my to-do list purely for Ms. Maslany; I suspect at this point I'll end up waiting a while to see if there's a proper ending, first.

Surprised they made the decision so soon. Well it sounds like it's poor ratings may have had something to do with it. They really should have made a more adult and serious star trek show. They were trying to reinvent star trek placing it in a century too far out and trying to gain a younger audience by focusing on younger characters. It was doomed to fail. This show is beating TOS by being canceled after only two seasons. Never thought I would see a live trek canceled this fast. I wonder if Kurtzman is gone as well?
