This kind of tech may explain how everyone can walk long distances on a small holodeck.

Well, the TNG tech manual explicitly states exactly that ("substrate forcefield creates 'treadmill' effect"). Although the HoloTile Floor would be more like a horse-and-buggy cousin to the holodeck's Ferrari.
Also, I remember seeing this when it was showcased a couple years ago. Haven't heard anything on it since.

It's real! One these treadmills in the middle of those AR rooms would be insane.
I have always assumed that the holodeck basically subdivides the space for multiple parties. Say three people are in there, one walks a mile away from the other two who are just a few meters away from each other. Once the walker gets halfway across the holodeck and the software isolates him with a wall of holo-imagery that includes the other two people he's there with. There's still a maximum number of people that can fit in there and manage the effect since each group needs enough volume around them to make the isolated "holo-stage."

Didn't Shatners "Avenger" pretty much show this, with one of the characters having to blindly feel their way to the limit of the Holodeck.
pretty sure it's described this way in an episode, but at a certain point it just makes more sense to have a series of smaller rooms that can be networked together...
and then you have instances where part of the holodeck infrustructure is behind certain parts of the environment... and people have to go looking for it... and if they aren't physically near each other (and, necessarily, the walls of the holodeck), does that mean it's also projecting it's circutry and whatnot for them?
iirc spock has to throw kirk at a wall to find the real wall, but it's been a while...
