The Hughes XH-17 was such a crazy idea.

The XH-17, which had a two-bladed main rotor system with a diameter of 134 feet (41 m), still holds the world record for flying with the largest rotor system. It was capable of flying at a gross weight of more than 50,000 pounds (23,000 kg), but proved too inefficient and cumbersome to be mass-produced beyond the prototype unit.

No wonder Helicopter Rotar Blades stopped growing in length/diameter.
41 meters diameter is the world record that hasn't been exceeded.

Their crazy Tip Propulsion was too inefficient for it's era & VERY loud, apparently it could be heard 8 miles away.

Sounds like the Thunderscreech which could be heard 25 miles away.

I suppose my favorite plane is the DC-3. I know, boring.
I saw one of those fly right over me a few years ago out in the boonies while plinking at a range. I heard the motors and thought "those are radials" in time to look up. It's my favorite plane from FS2004

Single engine??? Ahem whoever wrote this...

Douglas DC-3 | National Air and Space Museum https://airandspace.si.edu/collecti...ecord,and efficient single-engine performance.

What this refers to is that the DC-3 was designed to be able to climb slowly if an engine went during takeoff or maintain the present height if one engine stopped in level flight depending on fuel state, cargo/passenger load and altitude. IIRC, the standard was to be able to return to the field in an engine out situation if they were at high altitude like the field at Denver (5,000 feet), but not much higher than that

Wright and Pratt & Whitney were finally making powerful radials that were reliable compared to earlier aircraft engines. Feather the dead prop (not the good one, please - which has happened), trim the rudder and you won't die - most of the time.

The Model A of airliners.

That is really awesome.

Plus they look really good

Thank you! I grew up on Strategic Air Command bases as a service dependent. I've been deeply interested in flight since I was a toddler. Mather AFB, Elmendorf, March, Carswell, Westover, Offut, Anderson, Torejon... I attended 7 different schools before mom's husband retired as a Senior Master Sergeant.

SomeBody within the CCP plays too many "Ace Combat" games and thought this "Giant Flying-Wing AirCraft Carrier" that operates near the edge of space was something worth propagandizing as a future Chinese Mega Weapon.

Seriously, they thought this was a good idea to market to their people?

DW - China's space aircraft carrier: superweapon or propaganda?

Tell them they're dreaming. This is pure propaganda and not even possible imho

I'm not even sure a supersonic or hypersonic flying wing is possible. The wings chord is all wrong for that. If it's just loitering at the edge of space, they either have to use rocked propulsion, which wouldn't allow them long flights and would require long down-time cycles to get the engines ready again. SpaceX they are not. Or if it's feeding O2 into turbofans at altitude, theoretically complicated but extremely hard to do. The Brits have been working on it for decades.

They state it would be used to launch hypersonic missiles. Ok. But if you have hypersonic missiles, why do you need a giant lumbering low-res flying wing to launch them? just launch them.
