So they do it without even bothering to know if it's okay for humans to do such a thing?

Why is it that in Star Trek, humans always have to conform to other people's customs, while aliens can do whatever they want?
Because alien ways are better, per Journey to Babel.

I loved it. DS9 is hands down my favourite Trek, and Sisko is my favourite Captain. Luckily I went into the episode completely spoiler-free, and for me it was a very emotional watch. I was misty-eyed at Jake's appearance, which thrilled me. Dax's late reveal was a nice touch that I appreciated. And it felt like I'd swallowed a tennis ball when we got Avery's voice over at the end. It's a shame that Avery didn't want to be actively involved, but at least he didn't stand in the way of what they were doing. I can't really think of another episode of Trek that's moved me as much since DS9 ended. As much as I really enjoyed Picard Season 3, I think even the sight of the TNG7 taking to the bridge of the D again didn't get me as much as this episode did. Great stuff.

I watched the whole goddamn episode, with reasonably close attention, without noticing that Jay-Den wasn't wearing trousers. I dunno, I'm watching the actors act - what they do and say, the emotions they convey - not checking out their legs. Not even Dzolo or Genesis.

I have to come to a message board topic three days later to find out that his skirt was outrageous, apparently because Burnett told a few very online people to be upset about it, and that the colors clashed (spoiler: they don't).

I'm sure I wasn't missing anything.

You were not. If the most complaints about a show about people is the fashion then that's grasping at straws.

I'm not watching for fashion.

It's a skant. Trek used them almost 39 years ago.

Sorry they're not Klingon blue jeans. Next crisis, someone?

Skants were different and we didnt see klingons wear them. The klingon uniform in the 23rd to 24th cebturies were the coolest looking. Now they all wear black leather jackets. Its a boring look and looks human.

Just head canon it as a form of unisex skirt that is worn in the 3190s. Jay-Den is a Klingon, and we already know they wear some strange stuff.

Skants are part of Starfleet uniforms. We only had 1.5 Klingons which isn't much of a sample size. Lursa and B'Etor did wear long dresses with their uniforms so Klingon uniforms weren't all trousers.
