Definitely the best episode of the series so far - I gave it a 9. I'm very glad that they didn't simply hit the DS9 nostalgia keg without having something to actually say; the throughline of uncertainty about how SAM should be as an emissary and relating it to Sisko's own experiences were meaningful. Jake's return was great too, and Lofton's delivery was very heartfelt and sincere in a way which put a lovely cap on Jake's story. The borrowed lines from Brooks were also great, and when the early DS9 theme played in the credits I teared up a little. Most importantly, I'm glad they didn't solve the mystery.

I wasn't particularly keen on the B-plot, or at least how they went about it; the message was perfectly fine, but the dinner scenes felt like they would have been better off in an episode more on its level in terms of humour. I didn't care overly about the bar scenes either, but it didn't bother me too much. Perhaps in a time where episodes were still 45 mins or so, those parts would have been cut for time. It might have made the episode near-perfect if they had, but I don't resent their presence.

As a side note, when Caleb was messing around with SAM's program, I wondered if SAM's Makers would have something to say about letting an organic modify and change her (even with her consent). It didn't have any relevance in this episode, but with SAM choosing to take her own path as her people's emissary, I expect that growing divergence and self-determination to come back as a plot point down the line given her Makers were not pleased with being essentially hung up on.

Anyway - great episode, best of the series so far. It risked getting in its own way with the non A-plot stuff but did a good job of telling a meaningful story that uses DS9 nostalgia in a positive way that relates to the characters. Can't ask much more than that.

This episode also cements my theory that 1.04 was supposed to be 1.02.

Ocam, Tarima and Kelrec are back after an absence last week, and the division of the Atrium at the start seems better positioned in the aftermath of 1.03, not separated by several weeks.

It was Avery, but I can't find a source for that poem.
Kurtzman said it's a recording he gave them permission to use, but how old or new it is, is unknown so far.
Apparently it's from Avery's album "Here". Unfortunately, the only copies I've found online so far omit the spoken word tracks.

Thoughts in the moment written between acts so I don't forget later.

Oh jeez. The cold open tells me this is probably going to be a looooong hour. I hate pretty much everything about this.

"He was never seen again." Okay, fuck you.

Great to give Cirroc a small role. Just before he appeared I was hoping we'd see a photo of Jake when he was older by showing Tony Todd, but an actual Cirroc appearance trumps that move.

I dunno what it is, but Tawny's prosthetics look...weird. Kinda bad.

This show's approach to scoring "wacky" moments is not my bag, baby.

I wonder when Sisko was supposed to have bought replicated a typewriter. So he's apparently a collector nerd just like us. ;)

Making Sam drunk. Even worse than usual.

More of the lamely executed rivalry stuff. Tedious.

Why is this show trying so hard to be doofy?

Tawny is Dax. Expletive deleted.

We all come to this stuff with our own wants and not-wants. This episode was kind of exactly what I personally did not want from a DS9 flavored ep. (Though not without some highlights.) I won't know for sure until later, but I think I hated it. I'm pretty sure I hated it. I feel a little bit like the first time I watched These Are The Voyages.

Yeah this was strange....

Sam punching that Romulan War College Cadet is serious enough to have her dismissed from the Starfleet Academy at the every least. The Romulan can also press assault charges against that hologram if she wants.

Yeah because Starfleet Cadets have never gotten into fights before. The episode literally mentions Sisko's own confrontation with Solok which resulted in an unsanctioned wrestling match. Kirk also regularly got the shit kicked out of him by Finnegan. Neither incidents resulted in anyone getting expelled or hit with assault charges. So please pull the stick out and settle down.

That is why i never liked Sisko or Kirk. That stupid looking hologram should have been dismissed from Starfleet. Anyway her makers or programmers want her back if she fails to explain organics to them. Well i hope they take her back and have her decompiled. The worst character in this show if you ask me.

Anyway, Sam's people sound suspiciously like the Star Trek version of the Kaylons. What really did happen to the Kasqian's organic creators ? Maybe we might find out in the future.

I doubt Sisko made contact.

His ass was kicked hard.

Or more likely he was easily pacified as humanely as possible.

10 out of 10!

Yes, there was definitely some cringe. The dinner scene was a little painful. And some of the earlier stuff with Sam during the teaser wasn’t great.

But the good outdoes the bad. The return of Jake and the Dax (played by Tawny!) reveal were very well done. It was so nice to see Cirroc again as Jake. A pleasant surprise indeed! I also appreciate the character of Sam and how they’re working with her here. Finding one’s own path is important.

This is likely going to make a few upset, but I think they did the right thing when it came to Benjamin. I am a Niner through and through and up until Anson’s Pike, Sisko was my Captain. I understand that Avery Brooks really wanted the idea of Sisko not being a deadbeat dad and suggesting that he was dead or leaving was not something that was wanted. I get that, and I think the lines from WYLB are done well in that matter. And Jake’s lines here also did a good job in explaining that. But at the end of the day, any efforts to bring Sisko back would have been… disappointing at best. Insulting to the character of Benjamin Sisko and the legacy of DS9 at worst. The mystery is the more important part here. Bringing him back for some epic battle or just to be there for Kass, Jake and the baby just would have seemed somewhat hollow. Like Jake said, Ben was always there. It follows through with one of the key points of DS9 about faith.

And I for one love that.

Gee I wonder why. What specifically about the character is 'stupid looking'?

As someone who did not like the direction of this episode, I just want to say I do not and never did want them to "bring back Sisko" in any capacity.

It definitely helps to remember that these are not polished Starfleet officers, they're not even green inexperienced ensigns. They are teenagers on their way to becoming that, and I think Starfleet Academy understands this and doesn't expel every cadet for the mistakes they make. Not every cadet is a Nick Locarno.

Not bad at all! Only thing I noticed a bit off was the pips shown on Sisko's uni showed three pips on a First Contact uni in the story book. (nit pick powers activated!) The DS9 theme at the end also got me directly in the feels. Klingons may not have tear ducts, but this human sure does! LOL

Just curious. What does "Series Acclimation Mil" actually mean? English isn't my first language and I can't find a sensible German translation. Or is it just nonsense?
