Yes. I didn't know it was one back in the day. Heck back then I didn't know the difference between Marvel and DC.
One of my friends still is - though I'd say at this point he's seen at least 95 percent of the film output (less of the tv/streaming stuff) since the 90s

I was first introduced to the character through Spiderman the animated series which the movie took elements from. Or that might be the other way around. The animated series took elements from the unmade script... I'm not sure which is true. But for me that's how I saw Blade. So I was definitely aware of who he was and excited about the movie.

The animated marvel shows of the 90s helped Avi Arad pave the way for the movies.
Not sure about scripts but the visual look of Blade is established for the modern era in Nightstalkers 1 (1992), then we get the animated series (1996) which also uses that look and then the film (1998) which locks in the look for good.

Blade and Abraham Whistler first appeared onscreen in 1996 in the Spider-Man: TAS episode "Blade the Vampire Hunter"; the Blade movie wasn't released until 1998.

And Blade was definitely depicted as visibly dark-skinned in/on Spider-Man: TAS.

And people that can read understood that what @JoeZhang said was, it depended on the type of tv you had. Now, me being poor growing up ment that at the time we had an old busted 80's tv set. Trust me, it was unclear. Not that the experiences of other people mean anything to you. We all know that only you are correct and the rest of us are dumb sheep.
