The Maple Leaf Lounge

what happened to jamil and danielle they both used to be news reporters then suddenly when they converted to politicans they turned into canadian trumpers

I'm not sure it's really fair to call them "reporters". They've both been columnists and radio talk show hosts. And as far as I can tell, they've both always been deeply conservative, so I wouldn't really say there was any "sudden" change in their beliefs there.

I've got things to say to some posts here. But it's going to take time to compose my own post, so let us take a break for some bhangra dancing in the Yukon, with Gurdeep Pandher.

This guy has been doing bhangra dancing in the winter for years, sometimes in -40C (he showed a thermometer to the camera to prove it was that cold). He's always smiling, always cheerful. :)

The link leads to FB. I know it won't show the actual video here. It's just a really short reel of him dancing in the snow. It's not a news-related thing, so I can't think of any reason why Canadians couldn't see it.

Oh, I didn't mean anything about the news issue. I just meant that FB seems to not allow you to see it without an account.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize. He's got a YT channel as well, but this one is so recent that it hasn't been posted there yet.

I co-admin a couple of groups there (one gaming, one political) so I'm there a fair chunk of every day.

Speaking of YT, this popped up in my feed. Rick Mercer's part is very funny and on-topic. The others... not so much. I didn't find the last woman funny at all.

But it's nice to see Mercer back, and the opening announcer... I won't spoil the surprise.

I could use times when my default emotion wasn't rage.

Some of the people doing the recall petitions had an arrangement with a local business to let them gather signatures indoors. And then some UCP Maple MAGA jackass threatened violence against the owner. And this is AFTER someone in the UCP cabinet outright recommended a boycott of the bakery in Lethbridge that's letting the canvassers use it as a base for gathering signatures in that riding.

The other day some deranged woman on FB threatened to run me over just for offering a suggestion for mental health breaks from all this political crap. She took great offense to my mentioning that I enjoy cat videos (specifically Love & Hisses), flipped out, accused me of having a fake profile, said she "wanted to ask me about the 18 people on my friends list", and then debated whether she should run me over once or maybe twice, and then decided once would probably be enough.

That happened on one of the AISH groups I belong to, so I reported it, got prompt action from one of the admins, who reached out to make sure I was okay after all that hostility, and I also reported this incident to my colleagues in the AISH group I co-admin. All we can realistically do is keep her out of our group, which my colleagues agreed to do, if she ever turned up there.

I don't know where this crazy woman lives, but I'm pretty safe from being run over most of the time. I go from the building to the disabled transit, then from the transit into the mall, reverse the procedure when finished shopping, and the only time when I'd really be at risk would be walking around downtown. But I think I'm more at risk from the City's dismal ability to keep the ice and snow cleared than from some crazy woman on FB. Doesn't mean it didn't shake me up some, though.

The crack about my friends' list upset me at least as much as the threat. One of the people on that list died recently.

I don’t generally like to use the “touch grass” phrase, because I find it condescending, but if anyone needs to be told, it’s this lunatic.

Glad to hear you actually got some kind of action from an FB admin, since I thought their new corporate policy was “hate is OK, actually, as long as it’s against people Republicans also hate”. But I would like to point out that someone making those threats here would be gone, whereas I’m sure she still has her FB account, even though what she did is blatantly illegal.

Assuming she’s even a “real” person, and not some bot, of course,

Yes, I listen to his channel pretty much every day, except if he's too busy to upload (he just recently moved from BC to Malaysia).

I should clarify that it was a group admin who dealt with it, not an actual FB admin (so somebody from Alberta). The groups generally prefer that any rule-breaking be reported to the group admins, not FB itself, as FB sometimes decides to just delete the entire group, or give them some other type of grief. FB would definitely not like most of the things that get said in the AISH groups.

Being part of those groups as member or staff can be a tightrope walk. You have to keep in mind that some people have mental health issues and/or their disability includes ones of a cognitive nature, and so they express themselves a bit differently from most others. But on the other hand, there should be zero tolerance for threats against other members, and I know the group where this happened doesn't have that in their rules (I guess it hadn't occurred to anyone on their staff that they'd need such a rule). I plan to double-check the group I co-admin, and spell it out if it's not already, because "treat each other with compassion and respect" might seem reasonable and obvious to most of us, but some people apparently need things spelled out a bit more.

As far as threats on discussion forums, absolutely people would be gone for doing that here, or on any forum I've ever been an admin on. Unfortunately there have been a few where a stalker is still there, even after the admins were provided proof of what was going on.

Well. Happy New Year to Domino's. I'd ordered pizza for New Year's Eve and they accidentally gave me an extra one. The driver was in quite a hurry so he didn't notice and I didn't notice until I was putting everything away.

It won't go to waste. And considering all the times that I've had issues with their online ordering, I'm not going to complain.

The extra will go into the freezer so I'll eat it next year.

:p
