DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

There has never been such a situation, but if Netflix had 'only' bought the Warner Bros TV production company and 'that' company had produced the TV series and movies, I would not have said anything. But the result is terrible for 'theaters'.

Ted Sarandos insisted that Netflix has no “opposition to movies in theaters,” as the streamer said it “expects” to release Warner Bros. films theatrically if it completes its $82.7 billion deal for the studio and HBO Max.

On a conference call with investors and press on Friday, the Netflix co-ceo noted that the company has released 30 films in cinemas in 2025, though most of those films have had a far shorter theatrical run than those from a typical studio.

“It’s not like we have this opposition to movies into theaters,” Sarandos said. “My pushback has been mostly in the fact of the long exclusive windows, which we don’t really think are that consumer friendly, but when we talk about keeping HBO operating, largely as it is, that also includes their output movie deal with Warner Bros., which includes a life cycle that starts in the movie theater, which we’re going to continue to support.

So 28 days for every movie, which will only encourage more people to stray home.

Edit: Even worse, according to Variety the plan is two weeks!

Somewhere Tom Cruise is fuming and when he makes a movie with Warner Bros he'll sign in red ink that his movies stay in cinemas past 45 days

I agree. Though I imagine it will sail through US regulatory approval under the current administration.
Incorrect. David and Larry Ellison, who now control Paramount, are donors and friends of Trump. So he has explicitly said a Netflix/WB merger likely won't get approved.

They just need to butter Trump up more. What’s another hundred-million dollars in a $82.7 billion dollar merger?

I'm glad it's not going to one of the other studios, especially Paramount.

If Netflix had only bought the TV side of the company, they wouldn't be producing movies, movies and TV are separate.
The way I look at this is, Netflix had been pretty much just the streaming service and the company that producers their content, but Paramount is spread throughout the entire entertainment industry, in a lot of places WB is already. So by buying WB Paramount would have been doubling up on things they already controlled, but at least with Netflix buying it, it won't be consolidating things like music or books and comics under less companies, it will be just be Netflix controlling the stuff that WB has.
