Superman

Adventures of Superman is a pure delight, among the character’s very best screen iterations. George Reeves remains probably second only to Christopher Reeve in the pantheon of great Superman performances.

So I got this guy in the mail today:

I don’t buy a lot of Funkos, but as a huge fan of the great George Reeves and Adventures of Superman, this one was irresistible. If anything, it looks even better in person. :luvlove:

Second only to Corenswet.

Reeve comes in tied with Hoechlin - being generous. But Reeve never had good material.

I might disagree with your rankings, and definitely disagree with your silly and showily iconoclastic swipe at Reeve and his “material.” (Ever the contrarian.) But you’re not wrong that Reeves, Reeve, Hoechlin, and Corenswet are the four pillars of live-action Superman greatness.

Reeve was fine. The movies featuring him were not good ones, regardless of what "classics" nostalgic fans might declare the broad slapstick of Real Estate Scam Lex Luthor to be.

Forty years later, absolutely.

Some movies hold up. Some don't.

Honestly, if you can "lump" 1 and 2 together what distinctions matter at all?

I don't even lump 1 and 2 together. For me there is Superman, then a looong wait for another good one. ;)
Yeah. The only Reeve Superman film I'm fond of at this point is Superman: The Movie, and overall it's a mixed bag as a film. I'll watch scenes when it comes up on TV somewhere, but not start-to-finish. I guess the "Superman's first night" sequence is my favorite part.

Similarly, I'll watch Superman's feats from Superman Returns, and find the rest of it pretty bad - I love the airplane rescue and that moment during the climax when Supes breaks the surface of the ocean, pulling the broken yacht with Lois and her family behind him.
