My copy of
Identity Theft was delivered today. Star Trek novels are basically the only books I still buy in physical form these days, and I much prefer to buy my physical books in-store, because generally I am concerned about the condition of the book. Unfortunately, last time I was at Indigo, this wasn't out yet, and it sold out before I was able to get back. (That sounds impressive, but keep in mind they only seem to order 1 or 2 copies of Star Trek books anymore.

) So I had to resort to buying online. Fortunately, it arrived in pretty good shape: no bent corners, tears, gouges, or other imperfections... other than the slightly vexing issue that the cover seems to have been cut smaller than the rest of the pages, by which I mean when you look at the front or the back, you can see an extra millimetre or two of the book pages extending on the right, past where the cover ends. Not enough of an issue to bother trying to exchange it, but I know it's going to slightly annoy me every time I look at it from now on.
The other book I bought today was non-Star Trek:
The Paradox Paradox by Daniel Hardcastle. This one has a bit of a story to it. I first learned about it the last time I was in Indigo, primarily because it's such a large book, that it immediately draws the eye. I read the inner jacket blurb, and it intrigued me, and it seemed like something I would want to read. But I didn't want to pick up the physical version (other than Star Trek, I'm almost exclusively ebook-only, plus the $40 price tag was a little daunting), so I figured I'd buy the ebook when I got home.
Well, I got home and went to the Kobo site... and there was no ebook for it there. I did some research, and found out there were some corporate shenanigans going on. The original publisher apparently went into administration (both the publisher and the author are based in the UK), and then they formed a "new" company with the same executives, which then also went into liquidation. The result of all this, was that apparently the company refused to pay the author money he said he was owed. The ebooks were pulled globally, because the publisher was no longer operating, and any remaining physical copies still available in stores wouldn't actually generate any revenue for the author. So I couldn't get an ebook, and going back to buy a physical copy just seemed wrong and unfair to the author.
But the good news is that just before Christmas, the author was able to reclaim the rights to his book, and he is now selling the ebook directly on his Patreon for £5 or C$10. (I don't know the price in US$, but based on the exchange, I'm guessing around US$6 or US$7.) So I bought a copy and sideloaded it onto my Kobo, and now I'm good to go!
I think
Identity Theft will be the first one I read, though.
