Spoilers Vince Gilligan's Pluribus starring Rhea Seehorn

I'm wondering about their reason for wanting to please Carol? Is it niceness or is it self defense? When Carol has a tantrum millions of them die. They would want to do anything to avoid that.

Also their morals are suspect as well. They aren't willing to kill insects but they hurried their takeover at the cost of almost a billion human lives? What the heck is that?

Wondering how the world works now. What companies are actually working now? Water, power, and food seem to be needed. Do they need information and entertainment for a hive mind? No schooling needed if even a kid knows anything he needs to. Do most people sit at home all day? Is there going to a be a welcome/assist aliens project going on?

Biggest question is why on god's green earth would you risk a biological experiment with alien tech? Did it include a stupidity field with the broadcast?

Working over two decades in the civilian electric power industry, the last 15 as a power system operator in an electric control center for an electric utility, I know you can't just shut off a city and turn it back on. Generators have a minimum and maximum power level. Shutting everything down that fast will cause frequency excursions that will trip off generators. This will cause a system-wide black-out. You have to perform a controlled restart with a black start capable unit, that is manned. It is a process that will take days or longer to recover from.

Perhaps a more pressing question is what caused people like Helen to reject the Joining and simply died? How many people died directly because of that rejection? Zosia told everyone the total number of people who died altogether as a result of the messy Joining process, but Carol didn't ask her specifically about those who rejected the infection and I couldn't help but notice that particular omission.

Is there any evidence that anyone rejected it, or that rejecting it was even possible? Helen fell and hit her head. I got the impression she died from that injury, not from anything related to the virus per se.

The other dead we saw were also severely injured; e.g., passengers ejected from car crashes, and so on.

There is an official podcast for the show much like the one they did for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Same host and Vince Gilligan pops up with other crew and cast members.

Can I just say how awesome it is that Genre TV is still proving lucrative nowadays? Shows like Pluribus prove that there's still plenty of interesting serialized narratives to tell in the field of sci-fi and fantasy.

EDIT: Plus, after looking up the show's genesis, focusing on a flawed hero who is out to save the world from an outbreak of aliens forcing happiness is such a great premise for a TV series. It almost makes me want to get a subscription, but I know I probably won't.

Carol might ask for a nuke next. Who knows.

I am not a fan of the third episode.

Carol acted like a Karen when she found the supermarket empty. she then asked for a grenade, knowing full well that these hive mind humans take things literally. She then activiated the grenade that was given to her, causing hurt to Zosia.

The loss of her partner has certainly affected Carol's behaviour.

I think it's tied with the actual nature of the Joining, something that was hinted by the uninfected when they asked Carol if she had talked to the Others about the Joining. I suspect they need the entire species to be connected, if they lose millions along the way to that goal.

I'm betting that they haven't told Carol everything about what's going on. As I noted, they don't appear to offer information unless directly asked and that's going to lead to some big reveal about them later on.

That aligns with my earlier questions about where is everyone and what are they doing?

Nah, just some classic human stupidity. I knew the moment we saw Karan Soni's character that the biological data would be released in that manner. Even though it was an entirely different situation, I was reminded of how the Rage Virus escaped at the beginning of 28 Days Later. A situation born out of ignorance and stupidity.

Except so many people stood frozen (as seen at the bar and the hospital) while Helen fell backward after being infected.

Damn, I'll try to check it out but I so rarely have time for podcasts these days. Who is the host?

I'm thrilled, too. The question is...with Vince Gilligan's involvement, will the show get any love during the reward season or will it fall the wayside like so many excellent but "non-event viewing" genre shows do? Hell, even with Gilligan's involvement doesn't guarantee love considering Better Call Saul holds the record for the most Emmy nominations and zero wins at 53. A damn fucking shame, especially for Rhea Seehorn herself.

Enjoying it but...

Carol getting angry causes the hive mind to have a melt down with deadly consequences ok. But they mentioned that when the zoos were opened big cats mauled some people, surely the shock and trauma of that would be far worse on the hive mind than a woman having a tantrum?

They are displaying a curious kind of fatalism. No concern about what their actions have on themselves. I wonder if individual lives have any real value to the hive mind? Once their memories and experiences are in the hive they are maintained and apparently never lost.

It would be interesting to find out if the others losing their rag (because they must sometimes surely) also affects the hive mind or if its just Carol for some reason.

This can work a few ways.

1. Carol broad casts emotions like laser beams that interfere with the gestalt, but Animals eating people is entirely not the same thing.

Or...

2. The gestalts empathy is crippled by disappointing Carol. People being food does not not enrage the animals. It makes them happy. Happy animals do not hurt the gestalt, if animal emotions even effect the gestalt.

Or...

3. It's all Bullshit. They are just trying to keep Carol "harmless" while they figure out what to do with her.

Or...

4. This is a built in feature that the aliens will use to control humanity, or destroy humanity, when their colony ships finally show up.

I just finished watching the first episode of Pluribus, and part of the second. Between Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and now Pluribus, Vince Gilligan is three for three!

On the surface, an extra-terrestrial influence taking over Earth sounds like "so bad it's good" '50s sci-fi B-movie material. But Vince Gilligan makes it work and makes it feel like first-rate television.

Rhea Seehorn was great as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul and she's a perfect fit for the lead role here.
