Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley developing Star Trek reboot for Paramount

Mr Ellis has more than enough money to burn.
Would imagine that he's probably willing to spend the bucks for another flash & bang Trek like the 2009 version.

The thing that gives me the most pause about this is that it could very well be a full reboot that changes fundamental elements of Trek for the sake of change. I'm also wary of anyone who worked on a Marvel film of the last five to ten years working on Star Trek. Homecoming wasn't a great Spider-Man film (Raimi's first two films can't be topped) and D&D seemed almost a parody of the material.

One of my core criticisms of NuTrek, starting with the 2009 movie with JJ Kirk and continuing throughout the shows, is the immature behavior of the characters.

Judging based on the body of work of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, I'm very skeptical that they are a good fit for Star Trek.

All of their movies are either comedies or have a very comedic/juvenile tone:
  • Horrible Bosses 2011 - crime comedy film
  • The Incredible Burt Wonderstone 2013 - comedy film
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 2013 - animated science fiction comedy film
  • Horrible Bosses 2 2014 - crime comedy film
  • Vacation 2015 - road comedy film
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming 2017 (comedic tone)
  • Game Night 2018 - black comedy action film
  • Vacation Friends 2021 - buddy comedy film
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2023 - fantasy heist comedy film
  • The Flash 2023 (comedic tone)

Meh. Count me out on this. The complete lack of details tells me this isn't serious. "A new Star Trek that has nothing to do with the rest". The future of Trek is, currently, two more seasons of SNW and Starfleet Academy. Once SNW ends, I have no doubt that we'll get ST: 5 Year Mission, which will be a TOS reboot/continuation with the new cast.

God forbid someone has the temerity to laugh on screen.

Wait until you learn about some of Gene Roddenberry's other credits:guffaw:

Why even bother? Just make a new TV show.

A Star Trek film not connected to anything from before just seems utterly pointless.

I think that one of the reasons ST09 worked for non Trek fans is because everything looked new, while they were used to snippets of TOS and TNG here and there and it looked dated. Bring in a whole new crowd with something NOT Kirk and Spock. Because that's the problem. Even though I love SNW, we're already leaning into Kirk/Spock and the showrunners actually said they want to make a Year One show.

Star Trek is a huge universe, and we DO NOT NEED another Kirk/Spock or 23rd century show or anything with known characters.

These dudes did reboots of Spiderman and Vacation. Spiderman reboot was OK. I didn't see the Vacation reboot/sequel but I don't think it was successful financially or critically. Unlike Orci & Kurtzman who wrote the Kelvin reboot there is no mention of them being Star Trek fans. Not sure if that is a good thing or not.

I enjoyed Horrible Bosses a lot, but if I want just silly distraction with no substance I have SNW.

Also having people that are noted for adapting existing characters then saying they'll have entirely new characters seems a bit silly.

It's probably a good thing.

The current Spider-Man movies are my favorite version of the character. These two got that started off on the right foot, so...

It's ok for producers not to be fans. Fans don't always make good art within their favorite franchise.
