Tron: Ares

New teaser commercial is my favorite. They go full retro in original Grid.

Also nice that there seems to be some efforts at personality and humor here. Having rewatched the first two recently, the original has a light, whimsical touch to it. While the sequel has almost the same serious, flat tone the whole movie.

Another thing that bothered me about Legacy from release - it has a two act structure. Sam looking for his father. Once he finds chin they try to escape Grid for rest of the movie. That’s basically it! It’s not much of a story.

We do not know much about Ares yet. But what we do sounds like more happens story wise. It’s more than going into real world. It also involves going into 3 different Grids too. It will be interesting to see what the story reasons are for that and how it all ties together.

I get the joke. But this a case where I am happy to be mostly oblivious to online culture. I have barely seen Leto in anything. But I never would have seen Morbius regardless of who was in it. Same for Kraven The Hunter! I am seeing it because I am Tron fan. I am not at all defending Leto. He is mostly a nonentity to me.

It will be interesting how big a role Jeff Bridges actually has in this. I know there was speculation he was last minute addition to this. Maybe even only in later reshoots. But the press tour during principal photography was prevented from learning he was there. Film makers hid his image and name everywhere. The reporters new at least one name was hidden. But Disney revealed his name long before the tour report embargo was lifted. Most of all he is all over marketing. Does not take a genius to figure they are trying to lure older fans and those not interested or who have a actual dislike of Leto...

BUT Jeff Bridges is doing promos with Jared Leto. So contractual obligations or not Bridges is all in on promoting the movie. Just saw a new one - Jeff Bridges asking Leto old school Tron trivia questions. Not surprising he got them all right. I am no fool. It’s all promotional shit. Curious to see where this all leads.

So Jimmy Kimmel is back tomorrow night. Which is much more important than Tron Ares. But it’s likely we will see guests from movie on his show before release.

Fan-made art based on low-level expectations due to Leto's track record and people's general dislike for the actor.

Oh, I see. I've never followed any of that closely. And I'm mixed. It could go either way, and I feel Disney's marketing hasn't really helped any either.

I don't either. I just know I've never liked any of his acting (except maybe Requiem for a Dream but that was literally decades ago) and I avoided Morbius like the plague just based on its horrible trailers.

This is fascinating! Bruce Boxleitner was just at a convention. He insists that while he is not in Ares he urges fans to support it in theaters. That is the only way to see franchise continue. That he wants to still be original Tron. Hmm see for yourself. We will find out soon but I feel like he trying to tell us something without breaking any agreement. Not the first actor to do so…

It does seem a bit odd that we're possibly getting a Tron movie without the title character.
In that video Bruce said he was not asked. Yet the director has been quoted as saying some declined to return. https://screenrant.com/tron-ares-cillian-murphy-garrett-hedlund-not-returning-director-response/ This article mentions Hedlund and Murphy by name. But not clear if that was from director. He names no one specifically in quote they use.

The one constant question is where is Tron/Bruce?

No reason for Cillian Murphy to come back. So much farther along in career now. Plus his character really was a cameo. Evan Peters either is his son or nephew?

One other thing that stood out to me was that he said the legacy characters won't be front and center, which does make sound like their existence might at least be acknowledged.
Was Cillian Murphy's character even identified as a Dillinger in the main body of the movie, or was that just in the post credits scene?

I'm confused. Is that what the movie is being called in some countries? Or is it a fan-made poster using the Tron art?
This isn't guys dunking on the upcoming Tron film I feel, its just the Morbius dudes making a joke that this is a Morbius spinoff. Like Requiem for a Dream would be a Morbius prequel. In the Morbosphere everything is related to the one true Morb.

I had to double check. Cillian Murphy was uncredited. It was officially confirmed afterwards he Dillinger Jr. The plan was for him to be in a direct Legacy sequel.

Evan Peters plays Dillinger’s grandson now. Easy to figure they originally offered role to Murphy and he declined. So it was slightly reconfigured. Gillian Anderson plays his mother. She is about 10 years older than Murphy but could have been his wife.

Yeah, I got that much. It's just super confusing without the context.

Morbius was bad, the negative reaction just took off and people kept piling on (and Sony thought the internet buzz was a good thing so they re-released Morbius into theaters where it bombed a second time). It would be like someone changing a Top Gun: Maverick poster to say The Mummy 2022.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a nice ad last night during Monday Night Football, which tied directly into the two of the game's star players. Glad to see them spending some money on exposure.

That’s basically it! It’s not much of a story.
Yet I still found it deeply moving. It's an interesting contrast of relationships.

On other, no Leto news, light cycle on display.

I guess, if you don't succeed, try and try again? This sounds a lot like what happened with another recent movie where the director claimed his movie was misunderstood and wanted to re-release it into theatres to get a better rating.

Directors these days seem to demand respect rather than earn it. They need to learn by making mistakes and work their way into making better movies. It's the only way they'll properly learn.

Nice. Wish they would showcase a classic OG lightcycle too.
