Tron: Ares

This claims last year Jeff Bridges publicly letting slip he is in movie forced Disney to change marketing campaign. My memory is fuzzy on when we first learned. Is that what really happened?

Really the Jared Leto situation made Bridges presence in marketing inevitable. I can not imagine how they were planning to do it otherwise. Maybe if they were focused on Evan Peters and Greta Lee instead. Regardless of Leto’s personal life and past box office it’s full Leto in marketing. Often with “publicity buddy” Jeff Bridges along for the ride. I put in quotes deliberately. Who knows what there real professional or personal relationship is. This is marketing campaign.

On a Tron Facebook group I have shared a lot of official Disney videos I post here too. The one with OG Lightcycle was not approved. Did not realize there was new spoiler post created. Which raises the topic which often comes up with new movies - is it a spoiler if it’s all over marketing?
I suspect that scene is edited different that what is in movie. It appears Flynn looks on as Ares uses Lightcycle for first time. Would not surprise if Ares uses that OG bike to find Flynn.

I'm glad they did, because honestly I don't think Jared Leto is really all that marketable, and if they thought they could keep Jeff Bridges under wraps while promoting the movie in favour of Leto, well, chances are there wouldn't be nearly as much curiosity in it by now, and chances are the movie wouldn't attract nearly the same amount of attention. When it comes to Tron, Jeff Bridges is at its core, so it makes sense for him to be part of the marketing. There's also a chance for Jeff Bridges to deflect some of the bad will generated by the presence of Leto during their marketing.

The previews have really made me excited for this movie. Im glad they are sticking with the look of the last movie in terms of the tech like the light cycles. Still wish they would have continued with the story Sam Flynn started but this Tron is better than no Tron.

Agreed! I just went to watch the Demon Slayer movie last night and Tron: Ares was the only preview I actually paid attention to  I’m really excited for it!

Disney has released some short clips from the movie. This is only one I have watched so far. Between Evan Peters and Gillian Anderson. Interesting that she has British accent but her son does not. There is a portrait of someone we remember in the background too.

Thank You! I really want that poster. I hope that is an option. Not just an online thing. My theater often as free bee posters. Love it if this is one of them.

Trying to keep expectations in check. Originally I had almost none. But more and more I see of the movie I like. I am not just talking about Flynn and original Grid either. The stuff with other characters beyond Ares himself look good. Plus in the last week or so more and more new snippets of action scenes that look great.

I very rarely go see movies by myself, but I just might for this. The only person I have to see movies with is my mom, and she doesn't want to see this.

Interesting that she has British accent but her son does not.

Just speaking for my own family, my maternal grandmother was from Scotland, and she married a guy from Da Bronx, so picture those accents in the same house. Mom was born in the Bronx, but grew up in New Jersey from the age of 12, so lost any Bronxian she may have started with. My sister was born in NJ but moved to South Carolina and picked up a lot of that accent. Her kids grew up down there so have a heavier accent, and their kids sound like frickin Deliverance.

Depends on where you grew up.

I'm in a similar situation, but with my Dad. The problem is that there's such a wide gap when it comes to interest. I need more friends, it seems . Well, I've got some, and I know of at least one who near me who has no interest in seeing this as he's not much into sci-fi. And I have no interest in seeing it alone either as our local multiplex is a bit of a jungle.

I usually see movies alone. I know there is a bit of social stigma to that. But if you can get over it it’s very liberating. You can see whatever you want. Really you do not talk to people during the movie, so it does not matter. I go to see other people’s reactions online. I got my drivers license much later than I should have - age 28. Even though I am 47 now I am still using the freedom to catch up on those lost years.

If it makes anyone feel better, I see a lot of other people going alone. Especially during daytime showings on weekends. I plan to see this first showing I can on Thursday night after work. It’s 3D. Normally not big fan of 3D but Legacy looked great. Big choice is if I want to see it first time that way. Also this was shot for IMAX. Closest is in Milwaukee an hour drive away. Last time I did that, maybe first, was for Superman this summer. If I like Ares enough maybe I will do that on Saturday or Sunday of opening weekend. Plus I got free passes to Milwaukee Public Museum. Make the most of my trip.

It's not really about the stigma, but rather the environment for me.

Visually speaking I've been impressed by what I've seen in the trailers. The only thing holding me back is I am not a fan of Leto (He reminds me a little bit of early Jude Law, like from AI) and I do wish there was more of a connection to Legacy. I may see it in theaters, but it won't be opening weekend.

I can't believe this is out in less than a week with virtually no publicity beyond the trailers.
I am saying or asking this sincerely - what is there that is missing? I hear this complaint for almost every big movie these days. Often from fans who must be living in a bubble isolated from all the marketing…

In fairness to you or anyone else who ever says that - most movie marketing is online these days. So its kind of targeted. Easy to miss stuff. But I only am basing that on what I hear others say. I see marketing for movies I will never see. I am seeing stuff all the time for Ares. New posters, clips, cast is on promotional tour. Jeff Bridges and Jodie Turner Smith are both guests on Jimmy Kimmel this week on different nights.

I am not signaling you out on this. I see this complaint with every movie in recent years. Best answer is marketing has changed. Just speculation but I think the studios have re assessed how they spend their money. The years of dumping loads of it everywhere rarely payed off. So it’s more strategic now.
