Tron: Ares

To be fair, I didn't enjoy Legacy because of Garrett Hedlund or not. Leto was good in the role. Wooden, but good. I actually enjoyed his portrayal at the end, revving up the Ducati and looking for Sam and Quorra. That made me want more. sigh

I'm indifferent to Hedlund but I wanted to see more of Sam whereas I didn't really care about Ares. The only interest I have in the character now is the potential meet-up with Quorra and that's more for Quorra's benefit than anything.

I thought this was a fine, quite enjoyed it, and it is always nice to see more of the Tron universe, so yeah, not a bad movie.

What is the Tron universe?

The original has a big mainframe, complete with groovy big digital scanner, that zapped a person in and then spat him back out without the designers/engineers of the hardware realizing this. That's literally the universe of Tron right there, the anthropomorphizing of what happens inside a computer, complete with a unique score that really fit the tone. Even the palettes chosen were very creative and thoughtful; the real world had everything and the computer realm had generally a red/blue affair, with others where needed. The multiple palettes in tandem made the movie far more compelling...

What felt like a few centuries later, "Legacy" is made. It isn't the same mainframe anymore and some code may have been ported over depending on the underlying architecture? I recall a temporal discontinuity between both the computer's clock cycles versus the much-slower real time of our universe, but despite buying the blu-ray I've no real desire to see it again. (The original, dated f/x or not, still has a charm that transcends and the low polygonal count also adds to the truly surreal nature of the universe that the sequels also miss out on.) The new costumes also looked too generic due to the symmetric look. The use of the then-trite teal/orange palette was pretty dour as well. Correct me on this in particular, but didn't Legacy's "real world" scenes also feature the same bland duochromatic palette? The orange looks great on a smartphone and the teal looks great if you're an extra in a zombie flick, probably.

A few more centuries go by and now "Ares" is conjured up. This one feels like it's got some potential - but how could the computer independently break its programming to program its way to break into our world? And would you want that to happen? Not all robots end up all sweet and charming like Data or Kryten when they work around their programming, which still remains a sci-fantasy staple.

The best part is this: All three Tron movies have the identical weakness: See that snake-like thing along the floor? Follow it to the wall, unplug it, and voila: End credits.

Like Knight Rider versus its sequels and remakes, the original Tron had a certain spark and charm and freshness that hit all the right notes that the latter entries didn't quite have.

I keep expecting Warner Bros to wave the white flag and someone to post "Tron Ares on digital in two weeks" Recoup lost reveune

I am glad that most who are actually seeing it end up liking it. There is a lot to like about it.

Glad to see mention of Greta Lee. I had never seen or heard of her before this. But I am in love with her now! Sadly most of her other work is on tv series available on streaming services I don’t subscribe to. I guess I will need to change that soon.

I still wonder how Disney was going to market this with Jeff Bridges a secret? More Greta Lee and Evan Peters? I wish they had more sold her as prominent character.

Make Russian Doll your top priority. While she's a supporting character to the greater...madness...of the show, she excels when she's on screen. That's where I first fell in love with her.

The Morning Show has been diminishing returns with each passing season but she was always one of the highlights once her character is introduced (second season). That said, I bailed on the latest season after the third episode since it has become so damn soapy which, unfortunately, includes her own character.

And, of course, she voices Lyla in the two Spider-Verse films.

I've heard nothing but great things about Past Lives but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Yeah, it is puzzling and I'm also disappointed that the marketing didn't focus more on Eve. Alas.

Just watched this. Interesting idea, average execution. Must've been a paycheck role for Gillian Anderson because there was really nothing for her to do. And apparently Cameron Monaghan's role was cut down to glorified extra.

It's a shame. He probably trained for like a month for a two minute sequence

Just saw it. It was fine. Even Leto was ok, and I'm not a big fan of his. I really liked the callback to the original film. However, I was a bit confused because the trailers made it look like Ares was the bad guy, when in fact the opposite was true.

Saw it yesterday. I regret that I contributed to its disaster at the box office.

My complaint that things taken from the computer world have magic computer powers in the real world went completely undressed. In the previous two movies people moved into simulation space have user powers because its a simulation. This isn't happening, it only thinks it's happening.

The biggest "magic" in Tron is actually the teleporter. Everything else moves into "things we have no idea about". Oh, and a software engineer in a company that make teleporters becoming CEO because he made video games.

BUT. I liked it. A lot. It's the first Tron movie (IMHO) where the characters are better than the story. The story is a bit iffy.

Leto was really good. Like... You're almost instantly rooting for him.

Most (not all) of the callbacks are organic and usually don't call attention to themselves. "It's all in ze wrists!" Which in the original is Flynn quoting SABRINA with Audrey Hepburn!

As usual, I don't get what they're selling here. Why does the computer stuff dissolve in 30 minutes? What are they building this stuff out of?

It's like Genesis: You can make an army that can destroy a U.S. city against U.S. military forces (almost by accident) and then vanishes without a trace? You don't think anyone is signing up for that?

I think the one callback that I didn't like was that the game grid still had a tear in the arena wall.

Others have noted: Why doesn't Ares look like his programmer?

Why did Julian's uncle work for Encom instead of his father's (Ed's) company?

That's only because he was wearing red and everyone's been psychologically conditioned to know that "RED BAD!"
