KPop Demon Hunters

We've been talking about this film in the Streaming thread, but I figured it might be worth it's own thread. This movie is breaking streaming records and having songs at the top of the billboard charts and I was wondering if anyone here had actually seen it. I watched it last night and I'm 41 and no familiar with the KPop scene and I enjoyed it. I even enjoyed it to the point where I'm thinking about it today. Yeah some of the fight scenes and dialogue were a little corny, but this movie had a really nice message, and it was really fun. It might be listed as a Kids movie, but I think it can be enjoyed by anyone. In a way, it's kind of like what Star Trek Prodigy achieved. It was targeted towards a younger demographic, but there was a lot there that even adults can gravitate to, and a message in this film about being true to yourself and sticking together was a pretty strong message.

I have seen it, pretty soon after it was released on Netflix. I agree it's a lovely story and I think the songs are quite catchy too. I know a bit about kpop but that's mostly music used in kdramas. I think that a couple of the songs definitely felt like they could be kpop songs for real instead of being written for the film.

I think it may put some people off by being animation and having kpop in the title, but it really shouldn't. It's a really enjoyable movie.

Actually never heard of this until last week when I saw the amusing Honest Trailer for it.

I have not yet watched it, however my 14 year old daughter has and CAN NOT stop talking about it. Physically incapable.

That seems to be a common reaction among the teen/kid crowd. Seen a lot of stories about just rewatching this thing several times.

Sony will definitely want more than $25 million to capitalize on the sequels and the franchise.
I saw where Sony also fumbled the ball in terms of the soundtrack. Sony Music had first crack at it, but passed. So the rights to the songs were shopped around and ended up with a smaller company under Universal Music Group.

Also Netflix probably going to have to pony up a lot if they want to get sequels because it was released in theaters (this being like 1 month plus after it's release) and made $18m this weekend in like half the amount of theaters a full wide release would get.

I've heard all sorts of possible ideas for the IP. Obviously sequels to the movie, but also prequels (telling the story of a previous generation of hunters... Whether it be the prior one which included Rumi's Mother and Celine, or the first in Joseon period of Korea centuries ago)

They do have a lot of possibilities. The prequel idea sounds interesting, but it's really Huntr/x that made this movie what it was. Would love to see a sequel or more. I also hope they don't bleed this dry.

I saw a few idiots on Twitter who hated K-Pop and the "animation" genre and called adults who watched this movie loser's. As a 27-year-old loser who has never listened to K-Pop in his life and doesn't plan to, but loves watching animation, I have to say I liked this movie.

Well, F them then. I don't need opinions from people on social media what to like or dislike.

If I were Netflix, I would budget $200 million for the second movie, Sony would pay 75% of the movie, Sony would take 75% of the movie's profits, and I would take 25% of the movie's profits and all the merchandise.

I finally renewed Netflix for the first time in ages, largely for this and Wednesday season 2. (It's been long enough that my previous profile and watchlist got erased, so I've had to start over.) The movie was pretty good; I'm not a fan of gratuitously low frame rates in 3D computer animation, but I always get used to it after a while. The story was good, basically a coming-out allegory, and it had some fun humor (the tiger demon had Totoro-meets-Catbus vibes). I felt the character animation could have been better; Rumi's face was often less expressive in the songs than it should have been, as if the animators prioritized making her look perfect and beautiful over showing emotion.

But if that's what K-Pop sounds like, then it's definitely not my genre. I hate it when voices are electronically processed, although it wasn't as chalk-on-a-blackboard unbearable for me as something like Cher's "Believe." Mostly the songs didn't do much for me, though I liked the refrain of "Golden" (which got quoted in the instrumental score at key moments), and "What It Sounds Like" was a moving climax and even made me tear up a bit.

Other than the processing, I couldn't really tell what distinguishes K-Pop as a genre from American pop. It sounds less like J-Pop than I expected, though my experience with J-Pop is limited to anime and tokusatsu themes and insert songs.

We watched this on a whim and really enjoyed it! I had no familiarity with K-pop, but the songs are insanely catchy. Good message too about being yourself and accepting yourself.
