I found my first Grey hair when I was twenty-four. I was completely Grey by thirty-five. Big frigging deal, I am now 65, have bus driver's arm, and for the most part am fine.

50 can be really rough because we tend to see it as a milestone age. Now that I'm 57, I realize how much more my health and attitude are in my control. It's made a difference. But I won't say it's easy. I try to remember that people used to retire at 55 and die in their 60s.
No, not at all. People, especially people who are close, don't qualify what they've been told so precisely when they speak to each other. It was completely clear that David had formed an impression based on tidbits or other recountings and things that Carol had told him about Jim, and that that impression was off base. Perhaps the reason was because Carol had been selective; perhaps David had made assumptions because of his own biases, especially in regards to the fact that Jim was in Starfleet, cf "scientists have always been pawns of the military". "Boy Scout" was David's impression, not anything Carol had said explicitly.
The aches and pain and memory blanks are real but better to be past 50 than the alternative. I buried friends in who never saw 34 years old.

Some did. It actually wasn't common. Most would retire at 60/65 and live into their 70s. As fewer and fewer children die, life expectancy increases. The only grandparent of mine that didn't live into their 80s died in a car accident, and both of my parents lived into their 80s, my dad almost to 90.
I actually find the older I get it's getting more difficult to sleep. Getting to sleep is the main problem, though I tend wake up earlier and earlier of my own accord. To say nothing of how common it is to spend an entire night just laying in bed and not sleeping at all.
Granted, I suspect all the time I've spend working the overnight shift probably did its part to screw up my sleep cycle.

My sleep habits have been shit since college. They've sporadically improved but not by a lot.
Gen Xers are in their 50's now e.g Anson Mount, and look younger than 50 year olds in the 1980's e.g William Shatner. Baby Boomers born in 1960 are 65 and look way younger than the 65 years olds in the 1980's.
(Generalisation of course)

Whenever I think about Shatner's age, I'm reminded that my grandfather was only a few days younger than him, but sadly passed almost a decade ago. I wish grandpa had managed to stay in as great health as Bill's in! Unfortunately, he just didn't win the genetic lottery.
