What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

With tragic irony, Carol is in her way just as ambitious as Kirk, and David is as much the rule-breaker. Carol and David could have benefited from a soldier's assessment of what they were making long before they lost control of the device.

The problem is that the decisions Carol Marcus made were more a reflection of the attitudes of the horny male creator of the show and the male writer of the film. Kirk was free from parenthood because Roddenberry wanted his hero to be promiscuous and because Nicholas Meyer thought a sudden family member would make a great plot point for his meditation on aging and mortality.

There were multiple writers responsible for TWOK.

According to Memory Alpha, it was Harve Bennett who originally contributed the idea of Kirk having a long-lost son with an old flame [link etc.]. This contribution was made early on before the story structure and themes were even clear.

The story, that is ultimately an amalgamation of numerous melodramatic tropes, evolved as it went through multiple drafts and revisions at the hands of several people.

Speaking of Captain's Chairs I wonder if we will ever get a Captain's couch. Or a bridge couch. I recall that being a initial idea for the Enterprise-D before they went with the 3 chairs. Controversial or not I think it might be interesting idea to make happen.

it's been a little while, but my impression has been that Kirk wanted to be involved, but Carol didn't want him to be. she didn't want David emulating him, she wanted him safe and secure and doing pure research.
and yet still dragged him into very dangerous work that could be easily perverted...

Originally, Carol had kept David's existence from Kirk entirely. This was reshot to the final version we saw where Kirk knew about David, but stayed away at Carol's insistence.
So was PIC S3 intending to mirror Kirk's situation, but went with Plan A where his son was kept away from him deliberately as well?

It seemed like a mirror of Kirk & Carol Marcus' exact same scenario, only with a bit more interpersonal baggage attached since we had more development between them in TNG.

just venting about someone doing the most bad faith thing ever in a reddit thread where the topic of whether or not starfleet is a military came up. apparently drawing a boob or two, or a girl with a laser cannon for a head, precludes me from making rational arguements
That's interesting, but we have our own drama on Trek BBS without needing to drag Reddit drama into things

Coupla pages late on the chair discussion, but...
my friend Frank got himself a Kirk chair. It's relegated to his basement, but we can sit in it without his wife making fun. Very comfy, but maybe not for long shifts. Yeah, I PSed the shirt :).

The Captain's Crapper.

Perfect if you've had way too many marshmelons. You'll have to sit down.
