Cobra Kai - The Karate Kid Saga Continues

You could apply the Karate Kid formula to anything with varying results.

High school student with dreams of becoming a grillmaster has to move to a new city because his mom got a new job. He gets picked on by a group of elite grillmasters. Apartment handy man beats up the grillmaster gang and it turns out that he too is an elite grillmaster and teaches the high schooler far east grilling techniques for the big competition.

True, it is a common enough trope. We've all seen plenty of movies that follow it. But in the case of this movie, it's in how it's applied. If you watch the movie, you would see what I mean. It's less generic trope, more inherently implied, through dialogue, story beats and ideas throughout the movie, that it's trying to copy the Karate Kid more than anything.

New kid in town has dreams of becoming a great accordion player but there's a gang of accordion-playing bullies at his high school who pick on him and beat him up. One night, the apartment handy man fights the bullies off to save the kid, and it turns out he's a master accordion player. He teaches the kid ancient accordion techniques so that he's ready to compete in the biggest accordion competition in the valley. Can he win and stop the evil accordion teacher's plan of franchising?

Eventually got round to the movie. Very enjoyable, lots of humour. Someone else said it was like it was another movie then karate kid elements thrown in later on, and it really does feel like it.

The fact the characters from the 1st 40 minutes barely interact with Mr Han and even less so with Daniel. Joshua Jackson's character seems major then isn't.

But still good predictable fun. The ending just thrown in for cobra Kai fans but was well done.

Do i feel the need to see anything else from this universe? Not really, the series wrapped it up nicely, the film just felt like a nice little epilogue.

I agree. I suspect that the original script didn't include Daniel and just had Mr. Han as a cameo. They likely leaned more into "The Karate Kid" being the teacher to the Joshua Jackson character.

I actually quite liked that aspect, as it subverts the expectation that the main character is helpless and has a thing or two to teach others.

Watched Legends last night. It's a really nice movie. It's a feel good film. My only criticism is that it's missing the emotional weight of the student-teacher relationship of other movies. Daniel Larusso unfortunately has little to do in this other than training.

Yeah, it would have been nice to have him more time with the student. He was mostly there to bridge the two eras. The new student has potential to become the new Daniel though, should they decide to make more sequels.

I loved that movie, particularly because I got the impression that Jackie Chan personally trained Maccio. The latter’s techniques showed a marked improvement over what he had been doing in CK. He was more believable to me as a martial artist in that film than ever before.

That's an interesting thought. I don't know how much time they spent together on set or off, or even if there was an opportunity for it, but it's certainly believable that he could have. Some of the stunts in that movie were really impressive. There are some stunts the new kid does too that made me feel like he could be the next Jackie Chan. I can only hope that there will be some more opportunity for the 3 of them in the future.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense now. There was a fluidity to it reminiscent of something from his other movies. When you have access to the best, why not use the best. I hope that means any future movies end up using the same team.
