The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

It's probably gonna be a hot take, but... while I love the art direction and production design of Villeneuve's movies, I find his work to be a tad bit cold and detached. Case in point - I find David Lynch's Dune much more rewatchable and interesting.

A Bond film shouldn't feel detached, and I hope Villeneuve adapts himself to the material. Regardless, the movie is guaranteed to look gorgeous.

I agree - I was largely unimpressed by the action sequences in the Dune movies even if everything looked nice. At least Villeneuve professes to be a Bond fanatic since childhood - so he should understand what he's getting into.

I'm thrilled at this news. I guess the one takeaway is that we're not getting a return to campy, silly, fun Bond films!

I guess the best indicator for what a Villeneuve Bond film looks like is probably Sicario. Hell del Toro's infiltration of the Cartel house in the final act could be a Bond pre title sequence (except Bond would never do what del Toro does)

The Dune action scenes are often great, it's just that he incessantly changed things from the book ( and outright dumped the lasgun-shield interaction because he apparently just didn't want to deal with it ).

And the word 'movie adaptation' means 'to screw it up'.

9 times out of 10 at least.

Figuring out what to change and what to keep the same is tricky, and it's very possible to get the balance wrong.

Thursday Thoughts…
A
one-and-done Bond deal for Denis: If you can’t get Chris Nolan, Denis Villeneuve is about as great as Amazon MGM Studios could do for both the quality and commerciality of its first James Bond movie. The Oscar-nominated Dune and Arrival filmmaker is certainly the most acclaimed and visually stylish auteur to take on Bond since… all of them? Though Sam Mendes (American Beauty) is still the only
Oscar-winning Bond filmmaker, both Lewis Gilbert (Alfie) and Marc Forster (Finding Neverland) had been nominated before they took on 007. Anyway, it’s quite a statement by Amazon’s Courtenay Valenti and producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal, as if to announce: We’re not the Broccolis, we don’t just want someone to boss around.
Still, the gig comes with limitations.
Villeneuve won’t get final cut, I’m told, and isn’t attached to produce future Bond film and TV projects—though obviously that could change in success. Studios have really cut off the trough for directors/producers who make one movie based on big I.P. and then attach themselves to everything after that. These ground rules were laid out in advance of the final director meetings that I
wrote about last week, so no big shock. Next up for Amazon: Picking a writer.
A related facepalm: Did you notice that publicist Kelly Bush Novak added her firm’s
name to Amazon’s Denis press release? No, publicists do not negotiate deals and are not typically included in talent announcements, but is anyone surprised? I suppose CAA should be thankful that the P.R.-seeking P.R. person didn’t demand to be listed first.
And speaking of publicists…

If those rumours are true, we’re going to have the youngest Bond since George. Even Craig, as a rookie 007, was 38 when CR came out, older than George or Sean in their debuts (Tim & Pierce were 42 and 41 respectively though had Pierce done TLD, he would only have been 32). It looks like they’re thinking longevity.

Holland check all the obvious boxes, yet just doesn't feel right to me. Guess he just looks too young, even at 30.
I think he’s a brilliant Spider-Man but to me he’s just too boyish and nice to be Bond. If they want someone from a superhero franchise, I’d prefer R-Pattz, Hoult or even the much-debated Cavill or Hiddleston. All outside the age range, I know.

Initially, Amazon was very interested in Christopher Nolan, who is Jonathan’s brother, even if that meant breaking a decades-long rule of not allowing a Bond director to have final cut. Until now, the Broccoli family held tight control of the franchise’s creative direction, and ultimately had final say. But Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother, Michael Wilson, relinquished the reins earlier this year and now have only a financial stake in the property. Either way, Nolan is tied up on his next project, “The Odyssey,” which stars Holland, for at least a year.

I looked at the news details and Sony will distribute 4 films by mid-2026. After that, Amazon's international distribution department, which will be established in 2026, will distribute them. However, Sony will distribute the films in countries where Amazon does not want to distribute them itself.

To be fair, apparently Dalton was offered Bond in 1969 for OHMSS or in 1971 for LALD (he seems to tell it both ways) and would have only been 23/25.
