DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

From the AV Club May 28th
The future of superhero movies looks to comics' past
After two decades of gray skies and grim heroes, both Marvel and DC are heading to the Silver Age for some sci-fi fun.

Superman, for the first time in his spotty solo-movie run, is embracing the whackier sides of his mythos, bringing in Kryptonian dogs, robots, and monsters. After decades of avoiding the goofiness that initially attracted Baby Boomers to superhero comics, the film industry finally decided it was time for the Silver Age to head to the silver screen.

It's like a comic book movie that isn't afraid to be a comic book movie. Of, course the last time Marvel tried this the movie was considered a failure--even though it made tons of money.

Off the top of my head I'm trying to think of some 'Silver Age' elements that were part of the Snyderverse, that haven't already be mentioned, and I could come up with Captain Boomerang, Mr. Mind, Starro the Conqueror. Deadshot actually predates the Silver Age. Then there was Hector Hammond in Green Lantern.

Out of that group, really only Starro and Mr. Mind were presented in their 4-colour comic versions--and Starro was the villain in a Gunn movie.

This is brilliant. It touches on a lot that's gone on with these properties as well as some basic truths about their appeal.

Well, if you want to get technical (and as a fanboy I do) Mr. Mind is a Golden Age character who was brought back in the Bronze Age. The version of Deadshot used in SS dates from the Bronze Age as well. Unless Will Smith donned a top hat and domino mask while I wasn’t looking.

The DC Extended Universe and the "Snyderverse" are two different things. Of the 15 canonical DCEU films, Snyder directed only Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and half of Justice League, and was a producer on the Wonder Woman films (though I assume his producer credit on the second is a token contractual thing because of his involvement with the first). The great majority of the series was made with no involvement from Snyder. The term "Snyderverse" is generally used to refer only to the alternate continuity that encompasses MoS, BvS, and Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Mister Mind is very much a Golden Age character, originating in 1943. As for Deadshot, he skipped the Silver Age entirely. He appeared in a single 1950 issue of Batman (late Golden Age), then was resurrected with a new design in 1977 (Bronze Age).

The Barry Allen Flash is, of course, the character who ushered in the Silver Age. Supergirl, Queen Mera, and the Ted Kord version of Blue Beetle also debuted in the Silver Age.

Then there was Hector Hammond in Green Lantern.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are Silver Age creations (though Kilowog dates from 1983). The Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott, had a different, more magical origin.

There might’ve also been posters of some other characters, I dunno. ;)

Variety reports that Warner Bros-Discovery lost $11.5 billion last year, the most coming from their streaming services, yet Zaslov earned $51.9 million - $23.9 million in cash and $23.1 in performance bonuses.

I hate to say it, but this feels like a sinking ship, no matter how well Superman performs in theaters.

When it comes to the question of whether a given film is in the same continuity ( or "verse" ) as the ones directed by him, it really doesn't matter if he was personally involved or not.

The Flash exists in continuity with Snyder's Justice League as opposed to the version released in 2017.

Here are the rest of the Daily Planet characters' posters.

I think this is the first time we've gotten Steve Lombard in live action, I don't remember seeing him any of the live actions shows or movies I've seen, and the only "other media" appearances listed on his Wikipedia page are animated.
