"Myself and Kevin(Feige) were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing,devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don't think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people's feelings, and hopefully there's a self-awareness about what's driving that attention-seeking behavior."
Sounds like you may be overstating things. He mentions that Johnny is still someone who's seeks attention, but they are looking for character driven reasons for it rather than just being the guy who hits on women and make rude remarks.

Now maybe Johnny in the old films was a womanizer, but not so much in the comics. He had several steady girlfriends, including Crystal from the Inhumans and future herald of Galactus Frankie Raye. Maybe that's changed since the "classic FF" eras by guys like Kirby & Lee and John Byrne.

He even married a Skrull that he believed to be Alicia Masters.

Seems like a pretty good collection of bad guys to me.
I don't know how to make links to things outside of YouTube but if you look into Joseph Quinn interview and IndieWire it covers it. I will give one quote thought by retyping it.

The whole thing screams "watered down" even by PG-13 standards. I get what they are probably going to go for. A more polite, neutered version of Deadpool. He will make Dad jokes and like to show off but nothing that strikes me as all that interesting, especially since we already got a great version of the character in Chris Evans. I mean I know they aren't exactly making a A24 movie but Disney really seems keen these days on sanding down the edges and making characters less interesting with less personality more and more with each passing year.
You're blowing this way out of proportion, it sounds like they're just toning down some possible dickish behavior, but that doesn't mean they're "watering him down" or turning him into a "goody two shoes", it just sounds like they're just getting rid of the kind of behavior that might be more problematic today.

Here's the full article on EW.com is anyone is interested, I'm pretty sure I posted it when it originally came out, but since it came up again here it is.

Thanks. Context is good.

Beh, I mean Homecoming had Vulture, Tinkerer and Shocker

Boomerang is such a low level guy, it'd be like Shocker in Homecoming, he's there to serve a plot function and that's all he needs to do. I have to imagine they're planning to work in the roommate thing somehow, otherwise why even use him?

I would rather them grow out of that behavior onscreen instead of just erasing it. While yes I do admit they will try to capture some aspects of the old character but to me that is what watering down something means. I have no problem with characters having problematic behavior because that gives them something to grow and evolve from unless your dealing with a anti-hero but I wouldn't really put this character in that category. Even in the Chris Evans movies you sort of see a change a little towards the end of second movie. The military officer lady he has the hots for, doesn't just fall over in lust for him. I do wonder how they would have written him in a third movie if they had made one.

Scorpion and Tombstone almost go hand-in-hand in a way. They both have ties with Daily Bugle personnel and I could easily see their stories intertwining, even if their goals are different. Assuming, of course, their depictions are based on their original origins and such.

Plus, they're both great street-level villains and Brand New Day certainly appears to be promising that kind of adventure, one that many of us (myself included) are certainly hungry for.

There is absolutely nothing in the quote from article or anything I or anyone else in the thread said that rules any of that out. There are still plenty of ways to do that kind of stuff without including behavior that would upset or offend people today.

Maybe but I don't really trust Disney. To many corporate cooks in the kitchen.

Since we don't fully know where Johnny is at the start of the film we've no idea what behaviors he may need to "grow out of".
Since this isn't the Evans version there is nothing to erase. Holland doesn't play the Garfield version of Spider-Man, so I don't expect his to be that version either. Like Holland's Spider-Man, Quinn's Human Torch is a new character.

What I liked about Holland was he felt more like a real teenager. Granted Spider-man is not really suppose to be edgy in the way Johnny is so their is not to much of a edge to smooth over. Being a good respectful kid seems to be ingrained in the characters DNA.

You think Johnny is edgy? :guffaw::guffaw:
Spidey in the early comics was a release for Peter. He could be cocky, sarcastic and irreverent. To be honest, that's been missing from the Holland films. Maybe the new one will bring that back.

Maybe not edgy but still kind of a lovable rogue in that old school Captain Kirk, Han Solo kind of way.
