What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

*Sadly puts away cork board, red string, push pins, and abacus*

I have a spreadsheet.

I'm very annoyed that the "official" timeline kicks TWOK's setting around so that it can fit with later films. You know what? Change the timeline on THOSE films. (Is it just Generations?) Punish THOSE fans / writers. TWOK had one of the only statements of time (15 years) that actually happened.

You’ve already bought what you’re going to buy. They no longer care about what you want.

I think ultimately no one really cares THAT much what CBS says the timeline is. It's going to be what we think it is in our minds to enjoy the episodes. and if we're so into the minutiae that we can't enjoy it, that's a personal problem.

Past purchases do not present an obligation for future enjoyment.

Absolutely. Which is why I eventually drifted away from CBS Trek.

My point was no matter how big a fan one is, CBS will gladly trade you in for a new, younger one. The money you spent quit counting the moment CBS added it to its balance sheet.

Being a fan really doesn't represent an obligation to CBS.

Yes. No. Maybe? I know that I used to spend quite a bit of money on Star Trek stuff. Which has dried up to almost nothing in the last decade. I can’t imagine I’m the only one.

The only reason I still have Paramount+ is because my Mother-in-Law lives with us and loves CBS crime shows. Which, living in a valley, makes OTA unreliable.

Watching Star Trek “evolve”, should be an object lesson for any fan, old or new.

Obviously this is true. And I'm from an era where hard and fast dates were certainly not a thing. TMP is "2 1/2 years" after some point after The Counterclock Incident. TWOK is 15 years after Space Seed. The next few movies are about the same time. TUC is a bit after that. GEN is a little after that. TNG is 78 years after... Something.

I'm all good.

Oh, and WWIII is after now.

I have Paramount+ for NCIS.

I am saying it doesn't represent an obligation because, theoretically, the product I bought, like TOS, is all the entertainment that they're obligated to provide.

If they want my continued business maybe they'll consider it but I'm not the only one they have to consider. Just because I liked past products doesn't mean they have to make something for me again.

Honestly, I don't even think TMP is really for TOS fans in a sense. It represented an evolving of the product.

yeah.. I am just glad that most of us slept through the Bell Riots. The 90's were kind of haze for me at times, so if the Eugenics Wars happened and I didn't notice.. meh.

What I don't get is why the "15 years after Space Seed" statement in TWOK presents a problem for later films, and thus had to be retconned. I gather that Generations established the start of the five-year mission and the year Kirk disappeared. But why is TWOK's date a problem? There must have been an issue somewhere to move the timeline, but what is it?

Heh. I realize that I don't know what it is. I just know the Okudas had an issue with it and they had to move TWOK to make something fit.

I don't care because I know that TWOK happened 15 years after Space Seed. And similarly I have never taken Admiral Morrow's "20 years old" with any seriousness.

Hmmm. This is all making me want to watch TWOK. Fascinating.

The Romulan ale McCoy gives Kirk for his birthday is said to be 2283 vintage, and they both comment on how long it takes Romulan ale to ferment. So the movie has to take place after 2283.
