Yes, and it's not paced consistently. They're easy going, practically slapping each other on the back with wordless affirmations of "isn't this cool, bro."

Which, for me, as an audience member being told there is a catastrophic threat heading my way would not be my reaction.

But, what do I know? Clearly it speaks to people on an emotional level that doesn't fit me. It's not logical and won't ever be.

It should follow amy measure of story logic too.

It doesn't fit me. It falls flatter than a snake's belly in a wagon rut.

It's not moving, it's not emotional, it's jarring and out of place in context of the story proposition.

I can only speak for myself, but I understand why they put this in the film. It was a reunion, those who worked on TMP saw the Enterprise as an important part of the cast.

I understand why. Except, I want multiple shots of Kirk as he meets Sonak, with close up on Sonak as he spots Kirk, them an alternate shot as they show Kirk from another angle, then dramatic music as Kirk rises in to frame.

Sonak wasn’t important to the plot. He was an NPC.

Or do the same for Spock when he first appeared on the bridge, panning around to all the characters reacting to the first time seeing this character, with all the music and lights.

Kirk's introductory scene is not told from anyone's point of view, other than the omniscient camera's. Sonak is brought into the scene as he passes through. If this was Sonak's point of view, we would have focused on him before focusing on Kirk. However, Sonak is a walking plot point and not a real character, so there is no point in undercutting the re-emergence of James T. Kirk onto the big screen for the first time by focusing on a character we've never seen of before that will be dead in a matter of minutes.
