What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

And they were still 12 hours from leaving spacedock. Scotty had his entire crew working on the ship. Him being gone 10 minutes changes nothing.

Plus, it helps Kirk be familiar with the new Enterprise.

This was beauty AND utility.
I don't see beauty or utility. I see people standing around and smiling.

Well, those transport pods aren't exactly hot rods in space. It's not going to be instantaneous travel. Probably went about the top speed the pod could go.
So you circle the whole ship with a slow moving vehicle.

One can smile while working, especially if they see the beauty in what they worked on.

A carpenter, for instance, builds a new deck for their house. Smiles while working on it because its coming out nicely.
They're not working. They're not carpenters. There's no beauty. It's a mission to save the planet.

I guess I don't have the artisan's eye. I built a house and don't care for it. It's not beautiful; it's a house.

And Kirk looking at the outside of the new ship gives him a better view of its strong and weak spots. So this is also work. And as pointed out before, they were directed by space traffic controllers, for lack of a better term, to not go to the direct area the pod would normally go.

Plus, she IS a beautiful ship.

Then don't make it an urgent mission. The pacing is so off as to be jarring from scene to scene.

And, probably extremely controversial opinion, it's a ship.

With now having fifty different versions of the ship, I think it is hard for some to know what that ship meant to the audience.
Everyone will feel different. They always have. Some will love the “character” no matter what “actor” plays it. Others will be drawn to a particular “actor”. Others will think, “Eh, it’s only a model.”

You're missing the point. It's a dangerous environment with lots of traffic. And they don't circle.

They went fast with the transporters. How did that work out? Remember Sonak!
Sorry. They didn't circle.

It still doesn't resonate with the scene before it.

The scene was important based on Kirk’s relationship with the Enterprise in TOS.
I'm happy for Kirk. It's not really a scene for me because context tells me "there is an emergency."

It feels out of place.

I'm glad Kirk has a love affair with a ship. I do not.

And that's the only reason a long scene like that ever exists - the audience and to see characters bonding.

Doesn't have to make perfect sense in the real world, nor should it.
It doesn't make sense in the story either. So, I guess leave some audience members out.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is my favorite Star Trek movie. My number two Trek movie? Star Trek Into Darkness. A lot of bad plot logic, but it grabs you at the beginning and doesn’t let go.
I think Into Darkness has the stronger third act over ST09, thanks to Kurtzman and Orci not having to contend with another writer's strike.

Hell, I even like ID more than 09.

They weren’t launching for 12 hours, and there were many folks working.
