Picard film in development

When it came to dates they were deliberately vague. The dating the Eugenics Wars was an uncharacteristic misstep.
I find SNW very creative. Berman Trek and earlier Kurtztrek, less so.

Misstep or not, as the hip kids like to say, it is canon.

How much of the 1990's have we seen since 1987?

We've got Future's End in taking place in 96 and we've got 11:59 taking place in 2000.*

Plus, we've got Carpenter Street in 2004, and Past Tense and Picard season 2 in 2024.

*It's a stretch, but I know some people consider 2000 to be the last year of the 90s.

We have one episode that takes place in the 1990's, and all of them take place in the US. I think it might just be that since they weren't important to the plot, they weren't mentioned. In universe, I'd say the US was largely unaffected.

Even with "Future's End". The episode takes place in 1996, for all we know Khan and his cronies have already been shipped off world. And wasn't there time travel stuff involved that may have put Voyager in a timeline where they didn't happen. Been a while since I've seen the episode.

Rain Robinson had a model of the Botany Bay on her desk, implying that the ship had already launched or was getting ready to.

I know about the model. I just thought there was a time travel element to the episode, Starling had stolen future technology and altered the timeline. That Chronoworx didn't exist once Voyager returned to the future.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. I always had the impression that it was a predestination paradox and Starling was always meant to found Chronoworx based on his knowledge of future technology.

It has been, probably, decades since I've seen the episodes. I could be totally off base.

Pretty easy to see The Eugenics Wars as part of WWIII without moving the conflict itself. A lot of unresolved issues from that conflict could easily be part of the trigger of WWIII. Which allows it to be seen as it was intended, but also as part of a bigger picture.
When did World War II start? When did it end?

What Spock said could easily be head canon-ed into him seeing the 1990's Eugenics Wars as a prelude to a much wider eugenics linked World War III (especially with the established lore about populations being targeted for elimination based on genetic flaws). Granted, he should have also merged WWI and WWII, but there could be different historical schools by the 23rd century, and Spock had a preference on how to categorize that historical period.
I do have to admit that I got a sad chuckle seeing one of the Soong's carrying a folder that says "Project: Khan" on it. How did he know one of the future augments would be name Khan?
For all PICARD S2's flaws, it does keep it's 20th / early 21st century backstory and lore consistent. Adam Soong does tie into Arik Soong.

It also references an international convention banning genetic engineering. IRL we have no Shenzhen Convention, so in universe it could have easily been a get this genie back in the bottle post 90's Eugenics Wars.

As to a Khan report dated 1996, perhaps intelligence agencies were able to access more information about him when he was deposed and fled.

But again, when we equate the Eugenics Wars with WW3, as has officially been the case now thanks to SNW, we've been told this is an era of great global conflict with millions being killed. Khan I supposedly controlled a quarter of the planet, nevermind the Nuclear exchange we know occurred. If all this had happened, I'd like to think there'd be some sign of global turmoil, even in Los Angeles.

Let's ignore the Augments for a minute and focus on something else..... the Botany Bay. We've seen 21st century Earth spacecraft, and they look nothing like the Botany Bay. Just look at the Ares IV... a ship nearly 40 years more advanced than the Botany Bay.

Or what about the Shuttle from the opening of Enterprise and Picard season 2.

I love TOS with the fire of a thousand suns, but some of the info that came from it just does not line up with the rest of the franchise.

There has been nothing that would confirm that a nuclear exchange actually happened during the 1992-96 event.

Easier to go with what is known. Besides, the Botany Bay was created three years before we even landed on the moon.

I'm okay with that. I prefer CBS not change it in pursuit of the dollar. If they want to do their own thing, then they should do their own thing not dismantle TOS for it.

I've always had this feeling that CBS/Paramount are too afraid to call their new shows reboots and would rather fans think that it's all part of the same thing, because they fear that less people would watch them if they weren't tied to TOS, while at the same time being totally unconcerned whether it all fits together or not. Just my $0.02.

There's also the tendency of some fans to view anything that's not considered the Prime timeline to be somewhat lesser than the rest of the franchise, regardless of quality.

That combined with the notion that the VAST majority of people watching the show don't know, or care if something is the prime timeline or not. Most people watching will just view it as a prequel to "the old Star Trek." For CBS to identify any series aa being something other than prime, would potentially be granting a win to the small but vocal minority of fans who choose to bash anything made after 2005, no matter how good or bad it is.

Not saying that's anyone here in particular, but there is definitely an element to the fandom that simply hates "nuTrek" because it doesn't conform to their vision of Trek.

You are right. Same time, there will come a point where CBS has to rip that band-aid off. I don't think it is good for the franchise to be a total slave to nostalgia.

How? He calls it the era of the last "so called world war" and McCoy calls it the Eugenics Wars. Both say it occurred in the era of the 90s. The two events are linked together.

Then we have TNG say WW3 and a post atomic horror occurred in the 21st century.

How much wiggle room is given depends on the fan but I find it rather plainly stated.

It kinda shocked me when I went back to rewatch the first episode of SNW, just how dull it was.

That's how a lot of TOS fans like it.

They tune in every week for a graduate seminar on ethics and philosophy.
