Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

My old-fan side still hopes it’ll be Susan for real this time. I felt incredibly baited last season when they kept signaling it was her, with flashback footage even, only to switch in an admittedly classic but somewhat out-of-character villain.

Agree totally. Really hoping for the real Susan to appear.

Davies teased answers to all things Mrs. Flood during an interview with SFX Magazine (via GameRadar):

"There are answers, there are spectacular answers. She's at her finest. And you will see her every single week – she's in every single episode. You won't ever quite know where and when to expect her..."
Evil Susan turn The Rani reborn as Rani Chandra via Chameleon Circuit before being forced to regenerate into Mrs. Flood CONFIRMED !!!!!!!!!!1!1!1!!!

Says the man who claims there was never going to be a decision on S3 until after S2 airs despite giving an interview where he said it was going to start in February after Gatwa finished in 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.

But hey, lying his thing, all the way back to "Eccleston's departure was planned all along".

Grain of salt and all.

Members of the National Theatre, which had booked Ncuti for The Importance of Being Earnest, have verified the tabloid's reports that Ncuti had been trying to get out of his contract six months ago.

I finished up my rewatch of Series 4 this morning with both halves of The End of Time, and I really enjoyed it. I think pretty much all of the episodes range from good to great.
I noticed watching Midnight that he did kind of the same thing there that with 73 Yards, by throwing one of the two leads, in this case the Doctor rather than his companion, into strange situation with absolutely no explanation for what was going on. But I think in this case it worked a lot better than it did in 73 Yards, since in Midnight's case the focus was more on the Doctor dealing with the other people on the bus. For me Midnight didn't really feel like it needed an explanation, but 73 Yards really did.
One of the big highlights of the season was definitely the introduction of River Song in Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead.
I thought The Stolen Earth through The End of Time were absolutely fantastic.

73 Yards would have been ruined by an explanation (IMO obviously)

I think Series 4 is ok. There's a lot of bang average episodes in there which are elevated purely by Tennant and Tate's chemistry into something more enjoyable. Plus, much as I enjoyed that season, even back in the day the RTD template was starting to feel a little stale, sure maybe Moffat changed things too much between seasons but it was like RTD had a tick box that was set in stone- the lighthearted opener, the lightweight early season two parter, the obligatory historical figure episode, the obligatory Moffat story, culminating in the ridiculous over the top finale where teh whole universe was in danger and the day is saved by a giant vacuum cleaner/everyone praying/the doctor twiddling some knobs.

Heck I really liked Series 14 but that template is still in use, the only thing missing is the lightweight early season two parter!

As much as I like RTD, I can't deny his seasons have a definite template. Even the Tennant specials in 2023 follow the template to a certain degree, The Star Beast is the lighthearted opener, Wild Blue Yonder is the somewhat average and forgettable episode elevated a bit by the performances from the middle, The Giggle combines historical tie-in and over the top Threat to Everything solved by a ball game.

If Ncuti does go I wonder if RTD will regret not sticking with the guy(?) who was the original choice? Probably not. Ncuti is very good and be honest, would you rather a great actor was in the role for two seasons or an average actor did it for four?

Then again if Ncuti is two seasons and done, then that means he'll have made just 18 episodes, only 5 more than Eccleston (well 18 and a bit given he has some screentime in The Giggle). Factor in that he's barely in 73 Yards and mostly on Zoom for Dot and Bubble and it looks worse.

I get that it's a difficult part to cast. I think you're in the market for one of the below, all come with their negatives:

  • The up and coming actor who's destined for bigger and better things who might not stick around very long (Davison, Tennant, Smith, Gatwa.)
  • The end of the career actor for whom this is the last hurrah (Hartnell, and I appreciate that he's not much older than Capaldi was but it was a different time and he was a much different person)
  • The character actor for whom the Doctor is a great role but who may/may not stick around depending on other factors (Troughton, Pertwee, McGann, Eccleston, Capaldi, Whittaker)
  • The actor for whom being the Dr is a defining role (Baker, Baker, McCoy)

I realise I'm being a trifle unfair on some, especially that last category and you could certainly shift some people around (let's be honest, at certain times Tennant could fit into almost all of those categories!), but on the whole I think that's accurate.

Point is, ff you want a Doctor for 4 or 5 years the first category is out of the question, the second category might be, it depends how much left in the tank an actor has, the third category is again in the hands of fate. You could get Pertwee, you might get Eccleston, that leaves your last category and while you potentially get longevity you have to accept, with the best will in the world, that you might also get a weaker actor. (which doesn't mean a terrible Doctor, Tom being the prime example of this).

If Ncuti leaves, and if if the show continues, then it'll be interesting to see where the show goes next. For my money, if Ncuti does leave, then right now the show needs a Pertwee, a solid, popular actor who'll embody the Doctor and commit to the role for a number of years.

Sorry if I'm getting off topic here but I wasn't sure if I should create a thread for this or not. Anyway I'm interested in getting into this show and want to collect as many past DVD sets as possible. I understand that some episodes are lost, but I've also heard that some going back to 1962 are available, but are any of the older ones out of print? Also, is there a complete online list I could consult? I did a google search and found several lists but the way they are set up confuses me. They appear to be compiled by arcs, rather than by seasons and airdates. Any help would be appreciated.
