What games are you playing currently?

I played it on the setting that helps you find clues a little easier because I didn’t know if I’d have the patience for the gameplay and I don’t like QTEs. That helped me enjoy the story. Even in more traditional action games if I can get around QTEs, I will.

Since you’re spending less time searching for clues on that setting it speeds along the pace of the game. That might help if you ever pick it up again.

That's an idea thanks. Was this on PC? What setting was that option?

So I’m only a few hours into AC Shadows but so far I have been pleasantly surprised. They’ve grown from the criticism they’ve taken and Ghost of Tsushima has definitely had an influence. It doesn’t feel like your cookie cutter AC game and it certainly doesn’t look like one. I’m not yet into the open world of the game and were it not for the obvious AC aspects of the game, I would have know idea I was playing an Ubisoft game. The UI and visuals as well as so much focus on story (at least early on) are much better/more mature.

It’s something I’ve wanted AC to do for years (stop the yearly cookie cutter release) and give us a game where it feels like you actually spent some time on it.

We’ll see how it pans out but right now I’m impressed.

I've been hearing some very good things about it. I like the idea that both characters play differently.
I can see early on they’re makings mistake. They are going very in depth on Naoe and her story and I think they’re going to the same for Yasuke, the problem is going to near the end. Each character deserves a full in depth story with an ending appropriate to their character but I have the feeling this game is too ambitious in what they want to cover while not giving themselves enough length to get both stories told the way they deserve.

That said, they have really taken Ghost to heart and added in the small moments we Al, enjoyed (praying at shrines, hot spring, writing haiku and put them one spin on it. Huji kiri is a great replacement for Sakai’s haikues

This game isn’t as good as ghost (they haven’t set the stakes high enough yet) but it is so on the right track for future AC titles. Gives us characters and stories we loved fewer stupid quest for some really impactful side quests and let side activities give us rewards we need and can use (for Ghost that was crafting stuff for various weapons and armor and for AC Shadows it’s crafting great and building up bases). The grindy stuff is given a reward instead of just being a grind.

Mirage and Shadows have been the best AC games I have played in a while and it’s because both paid attention to what worked and cut out what didn’t.

Oh, you mean they don't have their own story arcs and character specific quests? It sounds like they did what they did with AC: Syndicate. I don't remember the characters having their individual stories either. That does sound a bit like an oversight.

I think they do but here at the beginning it feels like they’re going to run out of time unless the game is longer than I’m expecting. Right now it’s all Naoe for me. I haven’t seen Yasuke since the very beginning of the game. I’m sure they will meet up though because he’s with Oda and
Oda wipes out the Iga
. Given where they’re at in Japanese history there’s a metric ton that happens in a short time frame. I just don’t know how they’re going to really tell 2 stories here but maybe they can.

I recently purchased a discounted Fallout 4 on GOG and it's everything I've ever wanted in a game. I'm still at the beginning and am spending hours scavenging anything I can sell. I also bought SWAT 4, Kingpin: Life Of Crime and Deus Ex: Invisible War for the nostalgia. Just wish I had discovered GOG sooner.

Gog is great. And they do lots of freebies from time to time and giveaways ... Currently snagged Amerzone The Explorers Legacy for free

Recently got Homeworld 2 off Steam on my PC - played it back when it came out and remember being blown away by the whole package but disappointed that the family computer suffered a near heart attack trying to run it even at medium graphics (see also Football Manager with any player database over 30ish k) - and my god it has held up well.

I appreciate the storyline far more than I did back then (and it has with hindsight some interesting similarities to BSG although I appreciate that the story beats are not unique to BSG either)

Also really taken with how much the gameplay reminds me of Andromeda, the "warping" feels kind of Farscape-y, and just the overall package is as engrossing as it was when I was but a wee scamp

GOG is a great site, and I personally prefer it to Steam, especially when it comes to older games that don't always work properly on modern systems. If you buy the same game on Steam, you're not always guaranteed it will work without a lot of modification, and that's speaking from experience. Some of the older games I have on Steam are unplayable as they're offered as-is, with it being up to the end-user to figure out how to get working, and that can be quite a headache.

I recall enjoying Homeworld 2 overall, but getting annoyed at how aggressively it would scale enemy forces depending on the size of your own fleet.

Oh does it now?! I'll have to test that out as it could be fun seeing if I can do missions as surgical strikes (and therefore against fewer enemies) as opposed to my typical fire groups approach that definitely isn't stolen from the Star Wars Rogue Squadron series (or BSG, or I guess DS9 Sacrifice of Angels) where I send a small team of rapid fighters to fly by the enemy and draw them out followed by my cruiser and destroyer squadrons then piling in to the weak spots left open

I definitely recall one mission that was actually easier if you scrapped half of your fleet immediately before finishing the previous one.

I've got a way to go still with the storyline so I'll keep an eye out for any that give off those vibes and report back.

Also Civ 2 - greatest game the world has ever seen. Hill climbed, flag planted, I am dying on this hill

Why does everyone seem to like the second one more than the first Homeworld?

I have both on GOG and have played around with them but never really committed to playing out the story to either one.

Which one do you guys think is worth playing first?

I have never played the first so that is my excuse!
