Unfortunately, her appearance in pictures from the last few years indicate that she is, or has, heavily used some drugs. I suspect they led to, or exacerbated, some health issue she had and it eventually killed her. Sad.

Yes, she appeared very gaunt and unhealthy in recent pictures, but that could be for health reasons she kept to herself. Remember, Chadwick Boseman also didn't look to healthy during his last months but people didn't immediately jump to conclusion.
So let's NOT jump to conclusions and start nasty gossip.

As for her passing..... I remember being shocked when suddenly Buffy had a sister and wasn't sure where it would all go. In the end, Dawn was a great character and Michelle brought her to life. She will be missed.

Michelle Trachtenberg, star of film and television projects like 'Gossip Girl' and 'EuroTrip,' has died at the age of 39, Deadline has confirmed.

Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. No foul play was suspected and the New York Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death, police said.

Per ABC News’ police sources, Trachtenberg was discovered by her mother at her New York City apartment, who called police. She was said to have recently had a liver transplant.

Unfortunately, her appearance in pictures from the last few years indicate that she is, or has, heavily used some drugs. I suspect they led to, or exacerbated, some health issue she had and it eventually killed her. Sad.

It's not an outside possibility.

That said, a toxicology report would seem to be in order here.

Elsewhere I read she had a liver transplant recently. Perhaps there were unexpected complications and she couldn't get help in time / collapsed and hurt herself and could not get help (or was knocked out).

Well I didn't start a rumor, for one. I just suggested that her appearance was very similar to many hard drug users. And now after looking around online, it does appear that she was a meth user at some point and received treatment.
