Roberto Orci Dies at 51

I know he had serious alcohol abuse issues which is what lead to his big exodus from Hollywood. One would have hoped that in the past decade he found some peace and recovery, but there was concerning news from last August that indicated he was still very troubled. It’s a tragedy he never seemed to find peace and then pass away at such a young age.

While I can’t say I’m a fan of his Trek work, I am a fan of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, which now stands as his final credited work as a writer.

Omg very sorry to hear. 51 years, only 9 years older than myself. Very sad.
Thanks for the good times at the cinema. Pouring out some popcorn out of respect.

I love Fringe, and enjoyed the first Star Trek reboot movie. So while I don't know his work extensively, I enjoyed those. RIP.

And to some here... just because you can post, doesn't mean you should. It's the curse of the internet age; I can type so I must be heard.

Glad you feel better......he also suffered from substance abuse and had other demons he was dealing with that led to his professional downfall. There's a correct time and place for all that debate......but I feel like today is not the day to throw stones.
I'm not going to ask about the substance abuse or demons. None of us are perfect and we all fall at one time or another.

I don't think it's kind or classy to rip on people's faults after they've passed, particularly as you most probably don't know the whole story and that the family may see this too.

I don't know Orci, but I really liked reading his interviews and reading his interaction on trekmovie.com. That's enough for me to care about what happened to him and to be concerned with the hurt his family, especially his parents, are feeling now.

I almost feel the same way about Roberto Orci's Star Trek Into Oblivion film, as I do about there never having been a fifth Enterprise season for Manny Coto to showrun. I think both suffered from missing that final chapter to really leave behind a better legacy.

Beyond that is the tragedy of never having actually met either in person, because I'd have told them how much their work meant to me.

I'm somewhat aware of Orci's personal struggles reported and deeply problematic 9/11 theories. Everyone has a dark side and he clearly had that outsider perspective, together with a creative outlet for it on a massive stage. It's still sad everything unravelled for him, because it could've been so different.

I'll keep my fond memories of reading his Trekmovie, com comments, and even occasionally him finding mine interesting enough to reply to. I think he genuinely cared and gave as good as he got in discussions, whether tackling unreasonable criticism in long-form, or sparsely admitting you had a perfectly valid point.

Some of those Easter Eggs in 2009 and Into Darkness I recall complaining bitterly how much like shallow, name-checks they seemed... and he'd often come right back, in astonishing detail about how much more thought they'd put in.

Ooh, it seems like he killed himself. He shouldn’t have done that. A very sad day for his family. Condolences!!!

I went to what was supposed to be a free screening of TWOK in 2009 at an Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. I guess I should have known something was up when the line was out the door. Then wouldn't you know it Leonard Nimoy was there with what a big show of it all being a ruse and we actually got to see the world premiere of ST09 instead. Blew me away. I loved it right from the jump and have never looked back. Outside after the movie Orci was getting into the back of a black hired sedan. My now wife and I just took a moment to tell him how much we loved the movie and how grateful we were for him helping bring star trek back. That's my only Orci story, but it was a very special night. My condolences to his family. Another loss for the trek community.

There was a video of that, but now I can't find it anymore. Early during WoK, the film seemed to rip and the 09 people went on stage to stall for time until the film is fixed. Then some seemingly random person went on stage in disguise with a film canister, and it was Nimoy, who asked why the 09 premiere is in Australia, and if people wouldn't wanna see the new film right now. Orci or JJA or Kurtzman then said: Welcome to the World Premiere of Star Trek!

Gene Hackman and his wife also just committed suicide. This is really suspicious, something is really off
